I'm thinking of smoking tobacco by pipe because that's what they do in Lord of the Rings and I read the books recently. Anything I should know before ordering some expensive pipe and tobacco that I'll probably only use once? I've only smoked a normal cigarette once as a teenager to look cool but that was 15 years ago and I don't remember the experience.

I use to smoke newport plats and camel turkish royals daily. You literally cannot beat a Newport, and platinums were my preferred flavor. I bought myself a vape a few years ago and tried it. I didn't really enjoy it much but blowing these big clouds sure tickled my lizard brain. I also tried juul which I found was a good substitute for cigarettes but eventually i went back to smoking newports, then about a year ago I stopped smoking newports entirely. Now I usually stop at the corner store and buy a single black and mild jazz wood tip and smoke it on my walk to work. Sometimes I go to the smoke shop and buy a factory defect cuban or something.
I've been smoking on and off since I was 11 years old. I'm almost 25 now and I'm still not dead of lung cancer. Kind of miffed about that to be honest.

So long as you can keep yourself to no more than 1 a day your tolerance won't go up and each cigarette will give you that buzz that you liked in the first place. I try not to smoke anymore than 2 cigs in a week, usually at home after work, and let me tell you, this is the way to smoke. The problem with cigs is all about fighting the urge to keep smoking. Once you've had that first cigarette, no subsequent one will give you that same feeling until after about 24hrs.

don't bother getting an expensive pipe or expensive tobacco. a $15 corncob looks like shit but smokes well, and there are $45 briar pipes that don't look like shit and also smoke well. also be prepared to be disappointed by most aromatic tobaccos. the name should be a clue that they're all about smell and not about taste; most aromatics smell nice but have no taste whatsoever.

LOTR themed corn cob pipe:
https://www.tobaccopipes.com/missouri-meerschaum-cobbit-shire-corncob-pipe/

non-LOTR, but a good smoking briar pipe:
https://www.tobaccopipes.com/dr-grabow-riviera-smooth-tobacco-pipe/

basic maintenance:
https://www.tobaccopipes.com/bjlong-100-pipe-cleaners/
https://www.tobaccopipes.com/brigham-3-in-1-pipe-tool/

tobacco:
you may as well try what Tolkien himself smoked, his son says his study was littered with empty tins of this:
https://www.tobaccopipes.com/capstan-original-navy-cut-pipe-tobacco-ready-rubbed/

and this blend is one of the few aromatics that actually has a good taste, and it's even relatively inexpensive.

The first cigarette after a long time of not smoking does give you a buzz but your tolerance spikes so quickly that only the first cig does. If you can manage to smoke once every 2-3 days it does give quite a high.

Smoking is no longer allowed in most restaurants.
The law doesn't even apply to all but the largest restaurants, but it had to be changed because of criticism from nonsmokers.
Some bars and countryside restaurants still allow smoking, but it is becoming less and less common.

You are entirely incorrect. I travel all over Japan for work, almost every small city, and literally everywhere within 首都圏 has banned smoking outside besides designated smoking areas and now any new shop or restaurant cannot allow smoking inside either, except grandfathered places. Even designated smoking areas are entirely closed in many places due to covid restrictions.
Smoking in Japan will eventually be relegated to outside convenience stores until you are harassed away by other customers. It will be harder to smoke here than in Australia or Hawaii.
