You have to taste it though. For a good NYC slice, it needs to meet the following criteria:

I totally agree when it comes to Midwest-style pizzas (Detroit, Chicago, etc). But I’ve had some damn good NYC style pizza in the Midwest that blows authentic NYC pizza out of the water at rock bottom prices. I’m talking $1 slices that were excellent when I was sober

U of I alumnus here ('98-'02). Oddly enough I never had pizza from any of the places you mentioned except the Airliner, which was all right but nothing special. I did have Gumby's, Paul Revere, Home Team, and occasional slices from Pizza On Dubuque.

Gumby's is the only one of those that's still left and I always liked their Pokey Stix far more anyway.

I'm from Iowa City and I recognize that pizza, it's from Airliner. Their food is mediocre, but they remain popular for their location and atmosphere.

My favorite local pizza place is The Wedge because of their fluffy crust and high quality toppings. Excuse the bad lighting.
