Step one is finding one that doesn't scream its hotter than hell. That's not always the case, but high heat =/= good. Step two is what type of flavor do you want? Habanero? Scorpion? Ghost? Scotch Bonnett? Do you want it straight or mixed with fruits or other flavors? Step 3 is making sure the pepper in use is high on the listed ingredients. That means most of what's in their is pepper pulp. This will raise the price, but it makes it more quality or hotter. Step 4 is avoid anything that uses pepper extract. Extract is bland overly hot acidic spicy garbage, and is cheap heat filler.

As far as recs, Susie's hot sauce is always solid, if a little watery. If there is a location near you I recommend Pepper Palace. They let you try their sauces in store; this was pre coof though, and I don't know now. It seems their prices have gone up, but that is cause the more expensive ones use more all pure whole peppers. I've always wished they made tabasco with more pepper than vinegar. Still a solid spicy vinegar, but it's a unique pepper.
