It's not necessarily great but it's the one I'm used to.

If you want something rich without tasting artifical, picrel is excellent. On a budget, Appleton is good enough.

I don't think I've really tried it beyond middle shelf. Kraken and Sailor Jerry type stuff. I like the overproofed wray & nephews for egg nog cause I make it high proof but that stuff is hardcore - even asked an old lady from jamaica how they drink it there and she suggested with milk lol

The nicest rum I have tried has been made by Foursquare.

The nicest spiced rum I have tried is Rumbullion by Abelforths. Unfortunately discussing spiced rum just results in autistic screeching though.

What's a good cheap rum to drink both straight and in drinks?

Is plantation good? How about Appleton? Don't drink a lot of rum..

Plantation is ok tier. They are lightly sugared so more pleasant to drink. Appleton is Jamaican and not sugared so rather dry. You can't do anything wrong with Appleton 12 imo.

I like Barbados style, and personally I'd go for Mount Gay. Eclipse is great for the price, and Black Barrel is good value usually.

I would definitely recommend a cheaper Appleton first. They're worth trying, but the Jamaican style really isn't for everyone.

Picrel is my go to cheap rum. At my liquor store its around $11.50 for 750ml. They also have a more expensive one that tastes decent but honestly I don't see the purpose of buying a $60 rum when I'm gonna make a mixed drink with it.

my go to is probably mount gay because you can usually find it everywhere. the best i've had was pic related, but it might not have been that exact year; if you can find another plantation vintage some other country version i would buy that. diplomatico is also nice, but i have not been impressed by zacapa stuff. good rum is the best spirit, hands down
