Just unfroze of some pepperoni and it has this white stuff on it
Is it safe to eat

>> No.17699299

That's the fat on the surface solidified from being cold.

DO NOT EAT!!! rinse it in hot water to remove the extra fat. Boil the pepperoni before eating to remove internal fat content.

>> No.17699300

I've never frozen pepperoni but that is probably just frozen oil and salt squeezed out during freeze

looks like solidified fat to me. Those pepperoni sticks are so full of preservatives they'd have to spend a decade in the Saharan sun before they went bad.

Just peel the skin off, we do that with sausages. Sometimes it can even catch mold, but the meat below is still perfectly fine.

In all seriousness, that one slice is not going to hurt you. You might burp or feel your stomach churn slightly, but it’s not going to hurt you.

But please, for the love of god, do not put that on a pizza. You are seriously risking grave injury and possibly death.

As someone else has mentioned, that meat has gone RANCID. For raw meats and cooked meats, freezing them preserves them for long periods of time.

However, with cured meats (like pepperoni), freezing causes a chemical reaction that results in an effect similar to botulism. This process is evident from the white film on the exterior, the yellow postules on the interior, and the flecks of greyness where red should be.

Basically, the high salt concentration mixed with the ice particles of the freezing process and the fats of the meat synthesize and develop a saponification of toxins that in high doses is absolutely fatal absent a total stomach pump. If you cook this on pizza, the toxins will spread through the grease and into the cheese and bind with the fats and that will be trouble

TL;DR That one slice isn’t going to hurt you, but DO NOT EAT ANYMORE and DO NOT PUT IT ON PIZZA
