My mother was widowed when I was 3 and from there on it was very basic but nutritious meals. Taco night was my favorite, but I also enjoyed salmon night and spaghetti and meat sauce night
But since she's retired now her skills have gone through the roof, both baking and cooking. For example instead of steamed broccoli for our vegetable we'll have roasted brussels sprouts with balsamic. Last week she made a spring onion gratin that was amazing I had never heard of such sorcery

When I visit my parents I prefer to cook for her.
She never liked cooking though I think when I visit she tries to copy whatever I make for her after I leave because I enjoy it so much and she likes what I make.

Her food was so so. It fed me and she would try to keep it healthy and it definitely could have been a LOT worse based on some stories I've head about deadbeat moms. But it was a chore for her and she hated it so much and she has mental issues so dinner time would be unpleasant sometimes because she would be freaking out over some bullshit.

It wasn't bad, but not exactly good. Except for her chicken enchiladas, those were fucking fantastic. But she was always happiest when she was cooking for her kids.

Mom's cooking is pretty much what got me into cooking. Her food was mediocre, and I wanted to eat tastier food. And I wanted that happiness she got from cooking for her family.

Pretty good overall. Growing up she cooked very often and rarely ordered out or had us go out for food. Food was pretty tasty as well, and she improved on her cooking as I got older. Only real flaw is she doesn’t like to use salt when she cooks for health reasons, but overall her food is good and I make some of it myself. I love my mom.

I always ate what she served since I'm not a spoiled brat but to be honest it was rarely good. Not because she lacked skill, when she wanted to she could make some good meals, it's just she rarely ever wanted to put any effort in. Any opportunity to cut corners and shave time and effort she would take and the food suffered. She also almost never tried anything new, the amount of basic ass, canned sauce, kraft woodshaving "parmesan", spaghetti I've had.. Or on rare instances when she felt creative she would make some boomer 1950's cookbook-esque abomination with abundant kraft singles and canned cream of mushroom soup.
She does have a few good things she makes on special occasions though and I don't resent her for it or anything. If anything it encouraged me to try cooking for myself just to eat something more tasty.

My Dads is better.
There's a few things she makes very well, but the woman in my family aren't very good cooks.
Idk why. Whenever they cook something (anything) they turn the stove on high heat put whatever they are cooking in the pan, and just walk away from it.
If I don't stir it for them, and turn the heat down they burn whatever it is every single time.

You think you would learn not to do that after cooking for so many decades.
My Dad makes some bombass chili though. Really good fried chicken too.

She cooked alright, nothing spectacular but the bar was set way too high by my gardnmother who was an amazing cook. She taught me a lot of recipes and now I am fairly decent at cooking thanks to her. When she passed away I would usually cook for my family. Since my mother worked a lot.

It was alright and kept everyone fed until she tried going vegetarian to diet and it all just took a nosedive. Then another one after pretty much all spices had to go out the window because of Dad's chemo. Now I try to cook but anything one'll eat the other won't.

Mom's cooking isn't fine dining quality, but it straddles a very fine line between healthy and delicious that most struggle to achieve. She is a registered nurse with a degree in nutrition and is probably the best mom anyone could hope for. Not because she catered to every whim that my siblings and I had, but rather she provided a nurturing environment while still pushing us constantly to perform and achieve.

Dad, however, put storebought barbecue sauce on raw chicken before they hit the grill. It was not good. We dreaded days that dad was in charge of meals.

Bad, but my dad was a pretty good cook. My mom just stayed at home in bed all day or watching TV while complaining about life while my dad ran a window cleaning business and always had energy to make dinner.
