Look, I'm not in denial. I know I'm eating fried bugs. But damn are they good fried bugs.

>> No.17641486

Difference is that they actually taste good. Go try some fried crickets and tell me they're anywhere near as good as fried shellfish.

Well ya, but they didn't evolve without a shell.

The crab is "soft-shelled" because they soak them. Notice the caustic taste of the crab itself next time and don't just slather in dipping sauce.

Sea bugs, but its all just semantics. And they are quite tasty when prepared right. I really like dungeoness crab, love it in cocktail form. MD blue crab is ok, crab cakes are neat. I find lobster is best either grilled or as a bisque. Shrimp are just all around great no matter the style: fried, grilled, smoked, in a soup/bisque, in a roll.

The problem with land based bugs is they have no meat on them. Just goop on the inside. Any most are too tiny to do any processing to, you have eat em whole, or cover em with chocolate or some other cope.

I've read on numerous occasions that Scorpions, and especially Tarantulas (maybe arachnids in general) taste very similar to freshwater crab. Assuming that's correct, the, presumably, they taste good? I've never tried them myself so that's entirely going on their word. I haven't worked up the courage to drive down to the pet store to buy some bugs that I could eat. Outside of that, escargo is great when prepared well (with lots of butter) and Survivorman made Witchity grubs look very tasty. He said they taste like peanuts, and when he roasted a few, they had a crispy outside and soft inside. It honestly looked pretty good.

In a crab the gills are the finger looking things inside the head/thorax attached sorta towards the arms. They're sometimes called "drowned mans fingers".
To avoid, boil crab, tear off the top of the shell. Rip off the finger things on the side. The head has a lot of good meat in it, but it takes a little work to get out.I mostly know dungeness in my area. Some people eat the guts in the head, YMMV, I don't.
