Why did they create a separate measuring cup just for liquids? I understand there is a density question involved, but why did they feel the need to create a different measuring cup when they could have just measured everything in one standard cup?

Yes, I understand densities vary, but there is no reason why the same vessel can't be used for measuring both things.

For example: given that one cup of oil is heavier than one cup of water, a recipe could correct this by saying it needs 1/3 cup of oil or whatever the fuck.

There is NO REASON for two kinds of measuring cups to exist.
