I used to be able to drink and stop, but something snapped one day and every time I drink I can't stop until I pass out. I tried rehab, AA, and group therapy and they didn't work. They kicked me out of group therapy after I didn't show much improvement. When they kicked me out they recommended I take medication (wow, wish they told me in the first place).

Saw a psychiatrist (any can prescribe it) and was given the option of Naltrexone and Disulfiram.

I tried Naltrexone first. This drug helps prevent cravings and if/when you do drink it helps you maintain control so you can stop drinking on your own accord. Although it's only effective for 30-50% of people who use it. It worked for me, but I preferred to not drink period.

So we switched my medication to Disulfiram. If you drink, it blocks your body's ability to process alcohol at basically the formaldehyde stage and your body really doesn't like that. If you drink while on Disulfiram, you're going to wish you were dead and likely end up in the hospital. It has a 2 week life in your system, so even if I have a lapse in taking my daily pill, I always pull my head out of ass within 2 weeks. I haven't had any alcohol in almost 40 months now since taking it.
