Britbros of /ck/:
My brother who loves food moved to London a while ago, and I'm trying to send him some fun & useful stuff to cook via Amazon (I live in US).
The problem is I know NONE of the brands they have available, and I want to send high quality stuff (my brother will care). Can you give me some pointers on good UK brands for
>salt
>pepper
>other spices
>honey
>olive oil
>tomato sauce
>vanilla extract
>soy sauce
etc?

This.

Plus....

>salt
Maldon sea salt flakes

>pepper
>other spices
Given your bro has moved to London he won't have any trouble finding ethnic food shops - use those for spices they'll generally be far superior and way cheaper than anything on Amazon

>honey
Always best hunting a local supply wherever you are.

>olive oil
Believe it or not, Morrisons own brand is way up there taste wise. From Amazon? Odysea is pretty good.

>tomato sauce
Heinz of course. Or make you're own.

>vanilla extract
Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract but every Brit supermarket and a lot of regular shops will carry comparable and be cheaper.

>soy sauce
kikkoman of course.

Good balsamic? Giuseppe Giusti 4 Gold Medal Balsamic Vinegar 15 Year Aged is God tier but we're not far from Italy so it's all good here - there's a good chance that the corner shop just down the road will have a decent balsamic. If they don't his local supermarket certainly will.

>>17370321
I'll add - where in London has he moved to? I can probably hook you up with a bee keeper who's quite local to him there are several across the area.

>Maldon salt
Correct
>Spice from ethnic food shops
Correct for most solid spices. Dried chili will be a bit of a problem, as the varieties used in American cuisine are not used much. He will be able to get fresh bird's eye and scotch bonnet peppers and should be able to readily find dried Kashmiri (fruity sweet) in indian shops, Facing Heaven (citrus, hot) and Longhorn (neutral, medium - good for background heat) in chinese shops and Urfa Biber (smoky raisin, medium) in turkish shops.
>Local honey
Almost all 'own brand' is better than national brands in America, but do look for local suppliers
>Morrisons olive oil
Not sure I agree here, having not tried it. Fillipo Berio is good at the cheap end of good, Belazu is good for middle of the road good. There is no outstanding olive oil available on Amazon, tell your brother to go to Embassy Electrical Supplies, 76 Compton Street. Best olive oil in London, absolutely no messing.
>Heinz ketchup
Yes, though there are plenty of weird gourmet sauces too. If you mean 'Tomato sauce' as in American jarred sauces, then most people just start with a good passata as a base (De Cecco is okay). Seeds of Change make good premade jarred sauces
>Vanilla every Brit supermarket and a lot of regular shops will carry
Eh, generally true - if I want good vanilla I buy pods
>Kikkoman Soy
Reasonable for Japanese style. Lee Kum Kee's premium brands are good for Chinese and Indonesian

>>17370413
Thanks for the appraisal anon. Can't fault you.

Indeed if I want good vanilla I buy pods too - available pretty much everywhere.

I urge you to have a dabble with the Morrisons own brand olive oil. I use it especially when making garlic & rosemary roast potatoes. Way better than goose fat imo and so cheap it would be rude not to use it.

Something I've become aware of over the past.... While.... On /ck and talking to American friends is their branding shit.

What brand of milk do you drink? Seriously? Milk is fucking milk. If you brand it and one is better or worse than others it's gotta be down to additives surely?

What's your favourite burger mix? Wut? I buy meat and season it with whatever I feel like at the time. NOT some brand that everyone bums to fuck.

-Maldon salt is probably the best salt in the world, it's fairly affordable if you only use it to finish dishes.

-Pepper: look for peppers that are named after places: Penja, Muntok, Lampung, Tellicherry,... they're always better than average, no matter the brand

-One exception (for all spices) is Roellinger, a French *** chef who travels the world and buys the best harvests of any spice known. Very pricy. Ducros, also French, is a very decent, reasonably priced alternative.

-Lavender, thyme and acacia honey are very popular. "Rigoni di Asiago" is a fairly big Italian brand, not too expensive, good quality mountain honey. Their jams are great too. Maybe look for heather honey online.

-Olive oil: arbequina (Spain) has a very bold taste, lake Garda olive oil is the mildest, oil from Crete (Greece) is renowned since antiquity for its health benefits and a bit cheaper (for no reason). Avoid brands.

-Tomato: Mutti, Elvea, Cirio are the go-to standard (Italian) brands. Buy fresh Pachino tomatoes if you can, avoid the rest, especially tomato sauces.

-Vanilla extract made in China? No. Vanilla comes in long, slender, dark, shrivelled (but never dry) pods. Madagascar for cooking, Tahiti (different species) for finishing touches.

-Soy sauce: difficult. Japan doesn't export a lot of food since covid. Tomasu is Dutch and good. Kikkoman is garbage. Kikkoman is to soy sauce what Leffe is to beer and what Moet&Chandon is to Champagne.

-Forget about Kashmir chili. Yes it's a top product, no, India doesn't export it. You need family in India or friends at an embassy.

-Have a look at tea: https://rareteacompany.com/ and cheese: https://www.quickes.co.uk/, especially Stichelton, which is a Stilton made from raw milk.

>renowned since antiquity for its health benefits
What the fuck?
>Buy fresh Pachino tomatoes if you can, avoid the rest
'The rest' being tomatoes from anywhere else in the entire world than a single small area of Syracuse, in Sicily? Are you mental?
>Yes it's a top product, no, India doesn't export it.
Again, are you having a laugh? I can buy a big fuck-off bag of them from the local indian market.
>Stichelton
Okay, this is good, I'll grant you. But the rest makes you seem like a lunatic
