I’m high and just spent the last two hours making mushrooms out of modelling clay. Researching surface tension of water sounds like a good plan now.

Calling a bland, gelatin/agar blob a "cake" is pretentious as fuck on its own. Even the recipes you find for it will admit it literally has no flavor of its own, which is why you have to put soy powder and sugar syrup. Sure, I guess the texture is supposed to be the primary experience, but I'd like my food to have flavor also...

In 3rd grade, my teacher had me teach the class about surface tension for 2 weeks. Back then, I found it fun, but I still wonder why he made me do that.

Looks like a great way to supplement food for 0 calorie snacks throughout the day, to help lose weight, and without any phytoestrogens like soy products. And it looks to be super versatile too, I may try a couple recipes.
Not liking something because other people act pretentious about it, makes you just as pretentious if not more so. Just in general it's pretty cringe to base your opinions on the feelings of other people.

"Cake" is a mistranslation from the Japanese mochi. It's not the pastry meaning of cake, but the meaning of something that's been compressed, like old fashioned yeast or a cake of soap.

Probably just to have you practice the skill of teaching a group something which you know that can't be entirely explained with action alone. Surface tension was just a fun easy topic like you said, and something which a third-grader can wrap their head around at least on the physical level.

The weird thing is they're not actually lazy. They put absurd amounts of work into tiny little bites of food, but when it comes to the main meal they feel comfortable saying "fuck it, just serve raw beef".

The egg-in-yolk is flashy, but when eating tartare it makes sense to have it in a bowl as you go through the meat.
Tartare in general is a low-utility dish that is a marker of status but if you like the taste of raw meat there's an obvious purpose,

Making a steak tartare is actually more work than just cooking meat, since the meat is cut into really small bits with a knife, and doing that with the capers and other stuff you put in it too

Why wouldn't you just run it through a grinder or mincer or something? Surely the result is the same.

it's really not, though tartare can be made with a grinder too, it's not really as good texture wise. there's a reason tartare au couteau, which means with a knife, is preferred. It's also very obvious to the eye, the one which was posted earlier was made with a knife
