>toast
What? Buying something deep-fried from a store makes sense to me, because it can be a PITA at home, but toast? It's so out of place, too. They could drop all their bread and toasters and be even more competitive on their other products, very strange to me. No, I don't care if it's traditional or whatever.
>>17305367
>a place that literally only serves chicken strips
You've never heard of specialization? I'm hoping you're not from Europe, the epicenter of "we resist large superstores where you can accomplish all shopping tasks at once, and instead make you run all over to town to individually buy your cheese, your bread, your medicine, your vegetables, your kitchen utsensils...".
>fast food culture
Our country blows and everyone in the lower classes has to work a shit ton to get by, and we don't get as much vacation. You want your food to be as fast as possible sometimes. If you can find a place that does it fast, tasty, and inexpensive... great? Also, having less time makes it harder to do meal planning, shopping, and cooking at home. On top of that, our education system is crippled, so most people are at least semi-retarded and can't cook for themselves even if they wanted to. Even many wealthier people buy almost all their food pre-made or from restaurants.
What are the food options where you live? I've seen McDonalds or an equivalent in almost every country I've been in, and they were never close to empty. And the people inside were not tourists.

To be honest mate I was gonna write out a long reply to match yours but I'm too tired right now. If this thread is still up tomorrow I'll post my observations, I went to cali last november (my brother has lived there for 12 years now and my nephew is a yank) and it was an...experience. I don't have anything against Americans, I have liked almost all that I met. America was just such a bizzare place to visit for me, that's why I made that comment.

I'll definitely read it if you post it. I've only ever been to France and Switzerland, and food culture-wise, everything seemed the same to me. Mix of fast food and regular restaurants, snacks at gas stations, supermarkets with much the same products, people going to bakeries if they want a nicer breakfast, etc.
The one thing that stuck out to me was that every home made their daily coffee using those Nescafe pods, instead of from beans or grounds. I was very surprised to see that, and would have expected the opposite to be the case. I see pods sometimes here in the US, but it's mainly only super lazy old people that use them.
>>17305689
>>17305904
I'm from California, so I'm especially interested in your observations since I'll probably be familiar with what you're talking about. But also, many Europeans make the mistake of only visiting CA and thinking it's representative of the US, when it's really like visiting Spain and then saying you have a good idea of how things work in the Netherlands. Certain things will hold true, but other things vary from place to place.

>> No.17305969

>>17305919
I've no idea how to structure this so it could just seem like a hodge podge of sentences strung together, forgive me if that's the case. It's also not neccisarly all going to be food related.
To begin, I'm from London. Have lived also in Australia for 3 years and South Africa for 2 (parents). Visited many parts of the world, California was simply the one place that felt completely different to any other place I've been before.

I think a lot of it has to do with the driving culture you guys have over there, there was no real center to anything. Places felt dotted about, there were often long strips of road flanked either side by housing with a random assortment of mechanics, fast food places a motel 6 or whatever else. It just felt incredibly disjointed to me. You can't really walk anywhere, I never felt safe crossing the road (some woman genuinely almost ran me over on a go siganl) because the roads are just so fucking wide. It just felt like everywhere else I've ever been, there's always a town center with lots of people walking around, cafes, shops, some pubs to go to. I saw none of that there. Even LA was like that to me. I wanted to mill around Union station (pretty cool inside desu) whilst I waited for my brother to pick me up and... there was nothing to do, I was bemused.
Another part that was strange for me was the sheer opulence of it all, America certainly feels like a country with capatalism on sterioids. Buy the biggest fucking truck you can find, eat all your meals from a drive thru, go to walmart and buy literally everything you can possibly need (bongland supermarkets aren't like that). I remember walking down a beach, walking past the beach firestation and seeing like 20 fire pickup trucks, 10 caterpillar beach combers and a fucking helicopter pad. All for a 4 mile stretch of beach that just wasn't that busy. I now understand why your salaries are so high when there's just so much demand for stuff!

I was there for about 10 days are the culture shock was just so much for me that I remember not enjoying the first 3 of them. Which is odd because I'm well travelled and haven't had that before. The sheer scale of everything was unlike what I've ever seen in Europe, so much empty space. So unlike home.
I stayed in my brothers house for a bit and the suburbs were odd to me as well. Seeing my nephew cycle around with his mates, felt like I was on a movie set or something. Like in ET or Stranger Things. The houses are big, but not huge like I though but the walls are paper thin. Everyone has a green lawn and the toliet bowls are really full, but my SIL tells me cali is in the middle of a drought? Confusing.
Americans were really nice though, and sometimes quite amusing. Stayed in a motel 6 a couple of nights, met some characters. Some 65 year old dude heard me speak, asked me if i was an aussie then told me queen elizabeth has a crumpet up her butt. Some other guy had literally never heard of England, asked me what language they spoke there (I thought this was a meme).
Great fucking driving holiday though, I settled in eventually. Spent some time in LA, my brother lives in Santa Clarita. Went to Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Kings Canyon. Genuinely some of the best nature I've ever seen, I'll give you that. Fuck the central valley though, and fuck Fresno. Those places sucked.
Great weed too.
Most Americans were really nice, I enjoyed there company. But the place felt so alien to me I don't think I could ever live there.
I'm a carpenter by trade so I get what you mean about not always wanting to cook, I've just never seen so many fast food places in my life before.
Anyway that's all I can remember for now!
Great weed too.
One more thing, how the fuck do you guys drink over there? That was my biggest problem as a solo traveller and perhaps one of the most off putting things.

yeah born and raised here but this is one of the things I hate the most about the US. it's very isolating. it's a combination of our country being absolutely massive so things are spread out everywhere, and also the fact that when cities were starting to sprawl in the 40s, car companies were able to lobby politicians to have all cities designed to only be traversible by car. being able to travel around cities and across the continent without a car is one of the things I'm most jealous about europeans for

>can't really walk anywhere
Yes, true of many cities in California, perhaps the majority.
>Even LA was like that
LA was essentially the epicenter of the "car-first" transit / city planning movement. People thought affordable family cars were going to be the core of the futuristic society to come, and oriented things around cars. IIRC, LA built out highway systems before the national system was started, which is why many of those highways are still referred to by their original/local names, instead of the numeric designations they received after being integrated into the national system. LA is the worst US city (in my opinion, I realize for many it is their favorite).
This guy adds some extra info: >>17306257
>town center with lots of people walking around, cafes
Some cities have this. 4chan's favorite city, San Francisco, is more friendly to pedestrians than most, although I can't think of a single city I've been to in the US that is walker-oriented. Maybe New York is decent?
>>17306507
I haven't been to the East Coast, and as this guy points out, their cities were started much earlier (from 1600s versus 1850 or later for California and the West Coast).
>>17305969
>opulence
We have more space here, so big purchases like vehicles and stuff are feasible. For most people living in London, where would they keep a big truck if they bought one? The demand is sort of irrelevant, people in bongland might want it, but it can't be done. There is a lot more rural land in the US, as everyone knows, even in California.
>20 fire pickup trucks...
That could just be a centralized location, it's likely they service multiple beaches from there. Unlike a lot of southern California, Los Angeles is in a basin surrounded by mountains, so real estate is tight, and it's not affordable to rent/buy fire stations all over the place. It's easy to drive them places from one spot, because again, things are vehicle-oriented. Note again that LA blows and has the worst traffic.

>paper thin
Yeah, the walls here are not made of brick because we get earthquakes. There's also a lot of pressure to use less expensive materials, since people either build homes themselves (not sure how common that is in Europe, but as noted, we have a lot of land and people are constantly building into new areas in the US), or the land is owned by development companies that are trying to maximize investment and don't give a shit what the building's condition will be like in 20 years. I am guessing that walls are thicker in older buildings in older parts of the country not near fault lines.
>drought
We are in a major drought, yes, and it's a political issue here where people not from southern CA give them a lot of shit because they all have lawns despite living in a (literal) desert. It is genuinely insane, and despite being under (thus far voluntary) water restrictions, that part of the state has actually increased its per-capita water consumption recently. I hate to keep harping on this, but southern Californians are perhaps the epicenter of self-centeredness in the US. It's eerie speaking to them sometimes, and even my friends that are from there agree.
>never heard of England
I don't know what to say to that. We have some unbelievably stupid people, but I am not (yet) sure that it's any higher per capita than the populations of other countries. They're certainly more noticeable because its not considered bizarre here to just walk up to people and start talking to them apropos of nothing. As you might expect, crazy people are the most likely to do this, though, since they can't restrain themselves around anything novel or interesting to them (like an accent).
>motel 6
That fits, though.
>Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon

>> No.17306979

kinda, but mostly for the extra crispy. We literally just take fingers and leave them in the grease for like 30 extra seconds, but it always fucks up the line because that's 30 seconds longer we have to wait for you at the window while orders for everyone behind you start to pile up.

It doesn't mean much if the drive thru is empty, or you come for dine in/takeout since we cook by volume anyway, but when you're 30 cars deep and half of them want their stuff extra crispy it throws the flow of the kitchen off significantly.

yep. pretty much anything added at the window is always a pain, but if you save special orders until you get to the window it's the easiest way to piss everyone off.

Most restaurants i've worked in, we always fresh make no-salt fries, or at the very least wait for the next batch to come up, so that way we can avoid as much salt contamination as possible. So by asking for that at the speaker, we at least get an immediate idea of whether or not we're just going to pull you forward and walk it out when it's ready. Doing that at the window means that not only did you waste time by _being_ in the drive thru, you now also wasted time having to scramble to prepare your order again on top of whatever is currently on boards.

Agreed.
>so many fast food
One additional note here is that fast food places are often designed to serve food to people in cars. A lot of people grab food on their commute to/from work (sometimes very long commutes), or during road trips to other parts of the country. Driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles takes ~6-7 hours, and if you don't want it to be even longer, you grab food and eat in the car. That doesn't fully explain the huge number of places, but some. Also, of my friends that go to those places, many go very late at night when leaving the bar and they're drunk and hungry - most regular restaurants close way prior to that.
>>17306004
>how the fuck do you guys drink
I'm not sure about that, actually. That's a good question, I don't think everyone drinks and drives. In my experience (and I've always lived in dense cities so I can't be sure how general it is):
a) one person agrees to drink less/none and will drive a group of people to/from the bars
b) Uber/Lyft (way cheaper than taxis here) back and forth
c) bar in your area
d) at your friends' places
e) public transit
f) bicycle (my favorite)
>trains
Yeah, that's unfortunately pretty under-developed here. They'd only make sense on certain routes, but it exists in some places. Most large cities have bus / subway / light rail train access, though. The Bay Area is a LOT easier to get around than Los Angeles, which is famous for being difficult and/or time-consuming to traverse, even for people that live there.
>>17306013
Nice map. Hellscape is exactly right. Driving up the coast (the red line) is obviously a pretty route. If you ever come back to CA, I would suggest visiting the Bay Area (and telling your brother to move there). The northern third of the state has more hills and quite expansive forests, as well as more greenery in general. It's quite attractive up there, and almost entirely rural. Also, there are redwood trees from around San Jose and northward.

>Most Americans were really nice, I enjoyed there company
I'm glad to hear that, though I do hear it a lot both from foreigners here as well as when I'm abroad. Obviously, lots of us suck, but I think overall we're not bad one-on-one. I think Americans got a bad rep in earlier decades when they were sort of "newly affluent" enough to travel abroad, and were very ignorant of how things worked in those places, coming across as loud or demanding. Even today many (perhaps most?) Americans never leave the US, not even to Canada or Mexico. Plenty to do within the country, as it is enormous. Nowadays I think that reputation has been taken by the Chinese, who are the newest to be able to send their previously-village-peasants into distant lands. I don't know what the deal is with the French, but they are certainly next for being worst tourists (the individuals that have moved here permanently are great, no idea what the disparity is).
>so alien to me I don't think I could ever live there
I feel the same way about southern CA, and I'm from just a few hours away from it. Granted, moving anywhere is hard, and I salute anyone that's done a permanent relocation. I hate the way the government works in the US, but at least its semi-incompetent so the harm it does to me is somewhat minimized. I know that in Europe, the government is not seen as a hostile force with the frequency it is here, but the lack of personal freedoms (guns, pointy kitchen knives, speech) and (ironically) semi-Orwellian government presence of the UK (and to some extent Australia) unnerves me. Granted, I haven't been to either place, so I'm just going off hearsay and "Internet facts".
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in such detail. I hope you got to eat at some non-fast-food places here. I think most US restaurants blow, but what we do have is diversity. All kinds of food here!

I will never eat there because the name of the company makes me think someone is going to hit me with a cane. also it's a really stupid company name and any restaurant based around chicken strips is overpriced garbage
