Based.

This is my go-to ramen lunch. It's easy to make, absolutely stuffed to the gills with flavor, and doesn't take a lot of time. There's very little veggie involved, so make sure to have a healthy dinner tonight.

Broth:
1.25 cups water
1/4 tsp hondashi*
2 tsp mirin**
1 tsp dark soy sauce (koikuchi shoyu)
1 tsp light soy sauce (utsukushi shoyu)***

1 green onion, sliced
1 can sardines, mackeral, or herring

1 bundle Hakubaku organic ramen****

Combine broth ingredients in a small pot. Bring to a simmer.
Meanwhile, boil a pot of water and cook ramen to package directions.

When the noodles are nearly finished, add the green onion and fish to the simmering brother.
Strain the noodles and add to a large bowl. Pour the soup on top. Serve and eat piping hot!

* Substitute fish sauce or MSG
** Substitute 2 tsp rice wine and 3/4 tsp sugar
*** Substitute regular soy sauce is fine

They're pretty good and high quality. Better than Bela's and Santo Amaro's, which I see as their main competitors. Nuri's are still better than all three though. If you can, try Trata's. Product of Greece and they're like the half way point between King Oscars and Spanish / Portuguese sardines. Not too small and mushy like King Oscars sometimes are, but not so huge that there's only three per tin. Still have the crunchy spine that any patrician will love.

Also, the Matiz tined octopus is not worth the price, I wouldn't bother with it.

I love deenz and kipper snacks, but pic related is also delicious and very similar, but is substantially less expensive in my habitat (NC).

I warm them in a pan just a bit, then put them on a slice of warmed bread (winter rules). The oil soaks into the bread and it is awesome.

In my opinion, naan is the most overrated indian food item. It's less healthy than pita but I like pita more; and rice is already a good starch to match with curries, etc. And obviously you dont need bread along with a rice dish like biryani, etc.
Whenever I get indian food with my friends they always excitedly get naan, and I honestly cannot understand why. Compared to the rest of the food on the table it's rather bland, too. Indian food has so many spices and naan is so boring.
Anyway I love canned sardines.

>> No.17330438

Yeah, I know that's what it's for. Roti is better for that. The sauces are really strong flavored and overpower whatever "taste" there is in naan, making the taste of naan useless. If you're going to have a bread that takes on the flavor of your sauce, you might as well have the bread be on the healthier side, since you're eating it for its texture/substance, not its taste. (Again, because the sauce hogs the taste.)

Roti is the same thing as naan but healthier. I'd also take pita, a tortilla, whole wheat bread, or rice for the same purposes. Naan is the pinnacle of empty calories.

Naan tastes good on its own but when it's covered in sauce you cant really taste it so the buttery taste is effectively tasteless. I'm trying to keep my arteries clear so I dont want to eat a bunch of extra butter I cant even taste. I hope this clears up my position a bit.

Just had some Season brand deenz for the first time. Costco had a good deal on them. Overall a perfectly good but not mindblowing fish. Would be a good substitute for light tuna. I had the boneless and skinless however, which is generally not my preference. They also had the easy to peel foil-like lid, which I dislike as it feels much less ceremonious than opening a traditional can.

IMO King Oscar's is only really notable for being the best quality sardines that are widely available at retail. They're certainly not the end-all-be-all of canned seafood or anything, but they're a classic option that you can't go wrong with. What I would mention though is that King Oscar's sardines are all very soft; you can easily tear or squish them with no real effort. I usually prefer firmer fish, but it's not a matter of quality, just personal preference.

Like the other anon said, deenz in olive oil is a classic starting point. King Oscar offers two varieties, one with extra small fish, which are typically prized over larger sardines - look out for the cans with gold/yellow on the wrapper that say "cross-pack" (pic related). My personal favorite of the flavored offerings is the zesty tomato sauce.
