It isn't really about them being lazy or on their phones, as much as it is that most of them really just aren't very smart and think they're worth a lot more than what they put in. Good servers also act like they don't give a shit, and are gossiping with BoH while they wait for their ticket to be finished, but they effortlessly run circles around all the dum dums. They're also usually sluts. Not in a trashy way; they just know how to use what they have and work a room. I'm not saying it's a hard job, but it definitely takes some natural talent and just being outgoing. Chefs also often resent lazy servers cuz chefs are way more often proud of either the work they do, or their ability to handle a very stressful job, or both, and get angry when they see lazy people. Even more so when servers pull so much tips on top of a regular salary, which servers get where I live. I worked a popular and fairly high end restaurant and the servers were making between 1500 to 2500 in tips per month, on top of a regular monthly pay of about 2000 after taxes, so they were making bank relative to the work they actually performed. And to top it off, they didn'd even deliver food, they had teenaged workers on the rung below them that did that. And they had zero knowledge of the dishes on the menu. It was disgusting to witness.

Worked as a server up until last year; the best tippers are always white men around the age of 40 with obvious conservative leanings. The closer it gets to that cross section, each category weighted correctly, the larger the tip value average. ie. middle aged black men are more likely to tip than some white thot with dyed hair, and so on.

Tipping gives you nothing quantifiable and usually not even a thanks or acknowledgement therefore it's literally wasting money. Go buy a milkshake, go invest it, go give it to your kid for bringing you a beer. Might as well just burn it if you are going to tip.
