There are two types of scoring: functional and ornamental. Functional creates weak spots to ensure that the bread expands where you want it to, without it it'd expand randomly and create a messy non even bread. On the OP's pic functional scoring is the square. Ornamental scoring is just for fun, without any purpose, just like the dick on the attached pic.
