how do i into alcohol? i've been buying liquor just to try, and i really don't understand it. maybe it's an "acquired taste" thing, i don't know, but it all tastes more or less the same. had some japanese whisky i bought, tasted it, and the alcohol drowns everything out for me. i bought some hennessy, and it tastes almost the exact same. just alcohol. a lot of it. do i just need to keep tasting it? do i need to buy crappy stuff to compare it to? am i in over my head? how do i do this? pic related is my stash minus the hennessy i bought a few hours ago

i shiver and have the urge to almost vomit when i drink liquor unless i try sort of hard to ignore it. it seems like that's a response to all the bad alcohol i had as a teenager, but i don't know. does that sound right? i had a lot of cheap, plastic-bottled-coconut-flavored hard liquor and syrup-y sweet vodka during those years. and fireball. all to say, drinking isn't easy for me and i'm just wondering how normal that is

Alternative to being super "into" the flavours -
Enjoy getting drunk instead. After a few years you'll just get used to the taste and will find some you kinda like. Works every time.
Spare liver not included.

As a non joke answer, you may wanna stick to cocktails and shit if you just can't enjoy anything neat. Figure out if you prefer sweet or sour or bitter etc and try some things. I fell in love with Ocean Potions, which are just super sweet and have a few units per drink. Pretty bright blue colour too.

Start with cocktails and mixed drinks. Try various brands and see how they compare in the drinks. Once you get a sense of what you like and dislike, you can branch out into drinking liquor straight. You gotta try different spirits and find what you like. Until you get some experience, everything that's 25% or higher ABV is just going to taste like alcohol.

Alcohol is for people that have problems, or want go relax, or need social lubricant. You don't seem to have a purpose for it.

I started drinking when i was 18, I'm 36 now. For 3 months in between that time period I did not drink. My life is stress and I usually drink every night to escape. It's ok, OP, you don't have to be an alcohol person.

Also, mixed drinks are fucking gay unless it's a mimosa or subsidiary of a bloody mary.

Either wait till you are post 25-28,so your tastebuds biologically mature (no kidding, as you age, your preferred taste is sifting from sweet to sour and less sweet )
Or: sit down with some of your frends and pour a glass and take a chat.
I personally really hate beer and vine, but when I am with frends, its really doesnt bother me much. Probably some psichology effect, but I can drink, and like the stuff more. At home, alone? Its undrukable junk. Same with whiskey and gin.

>> No.17178924

I work in a Gin distillery doing tastings.

It's hard to really learn to appreciate any alcohol in the bubble of that one alcoholic spirit, the best way to learn the differences between any spirit are with direct comparisons next to each other in the same sitting.

Before you get to that, your mouth needs to adjust to the alcoholic content of liquor, you spend all day drinking regular things and then it's time for you to put a spirit in your mouth and all you get is a burning sensation with high ethanol content and it tastes like shit. you cough, sputter, maybe your eyes water up if you're really new - all the same, you haven't "tempered" your mouth. to adjust - take a small sip of the spirit and do your best to hold your breath for 10 seconds while you swish and move that spirit to every part of your mouth, don't look for flavours, don't try to make up your mind about it any which way just coat your mouth, swallow and take a moment to let it dissipate.

Once that is done, now you take a sip and you'll be able to taste it better, this is when you're going to be better able to taste it. done rinse your mouth out with water or soda water when you move between spirits, if you're comparing that Toki to the Jameson, look up some tasting notes and flick between the two of them and just bounce between the two.

When trying to understand the nose of a drink, breathe in through your nose and your mouth at the same time, hovering the rim of the glass just below the nostrils but not touching, otherwise, it'll just be a knockout of ethanol and whatever dominant flavours exist, oak, barley and vanilla.

I cant guarantee that you wont want to vomit - that seems to be a you problem - but you've picked some cheaper spirits minus the patron, that really aren't made for sipping, fortunately, you can always explore each of these with soda to give length to the body of the drink.

the thing is, none of it will taste good at first
on top of that, its hard, though not impossible, to find good alcohol at a cheap price point. a lot of snobs will pretend to like disgusting swill like evan williams or mount gay and thus lead you in the wrong direction.
I'd suggest scotch as a starter whiskey. something like monkey shoulder or isle of skye. for tequila, try espolon or g4. for rum, it depends how much sugar/additives you want. appleton is a safe choice. its a great mixer if you end up not liking it neat. bumbu is popular but rum snobs turn their nose up to it. I dont care for it personally, but you might like it. tastes kinda like candy

Continued.

Not every bottle is going to be suited for sipping neat.

Unfortunately, you haven't picked what I'd consider a good first impression of any of these categories, in any case, I'll try my best to give you some ideas of how to use these better to give you an idea of some versatility. I assume you don't have a shaker tin so I'm just going to stick to highballs.

If you insist on neat tasting - I stated in the last post you'll want to do a direct comparison. Jameson and Toki are two worlds apart but they're still in the same umbrella of whiskey, taste them side by side and try to pick some differences, the Toki should present itself as a lighter and softer whiskey with perhaps some sharper higher notes going on. the Jameson is an Irish whiskey - unpeated and it's going to be more nuts and fruits without a whole heap of complexity everyone tastes different things.

- 1/12oz of that Japanese into a tall glass, add ice and top it with soda - stir. this Japanese highball should be refreshing and you'll be getting the soft oaks and if it's still too much alcohol for you, take a wedge of lemon, squeeze about half a teaspoon in and stir it through. this drink is designed for hot days in a humid climate, Japanese highballs are a product of their environment.

The Jameson can stand up to more brutality, give it some length with ginger ale, lemon or lime to accent. same build.

The Blanco Is made for margaritas a small bottle of Cointreau would be a bonus for you.
- Fevertree Mexican lime soda and that tequila - 35ml tequila, ice and top with soda.

I'm just really sorry that you bought the Baileys. put it on ice cream or a cosy spot in a drain.

Jagermeister Is a weird one. Have it straight over ice but if you want to have some really fun tear up some mint leaves into the bottom of your glass, add 60ml of jager, add half an ounce of lime juice and then add ice, top it up with ginger beer.

Bottled in bond is a designation of authenticity. basically, you're going to get what you pay for more or less.
- Minimum age of 4 years
- Minimum 100% proof (50%ABV)
- Be the product of one distillery and one distiller from one season.

Regular 100 Proof shit is usually a straight bourbon, which isn't necessarily shit (just sometimes it is).
it's just not the same as another bottle. straight bourbon must be Aged in charred Virgin Oak Barrels for a minimum of two years, and with 51% corn minimum in their mash bill, however, even still, the other grains are going to affect the outcome of that bourbon, if there are rye grains in that bourbons mash ill, expect a spicy finish.

Single barrel just means that the whiskey only comes from one barrel.

When we think of scotches in terms of single malts and as blends, we often forget that single malt cant be the same malt from different barrels, this process is called vatting, and it's a blend of different ages of barrel to make a particular bottle, which may still be a single malt, but it may have an 8 year (60% of the bottle) and a 12 year (40% of the bottle) year blended together to make a single malt.

is it a gimmick? maybe.

I did post a drink that uses jager.
>tear up some mint leaves into the bottom of your glass, add 60ml of jager, add half an ounce of lime juice and then add ice, top it up with ginger beer

> i also did get some Hennessy
Yeah I did see that, the henny is fine for the most part but they're a brand and they don't distil their own cognac, it's outsourced to other distilleries and then the distillate is sent to the Hennesey blend masters to finish the particular edition of that bottle, so for what it's worth, I don't consider them much more than a LV of cognac, it's a brand. Just enjoy neat or if it's not the most expensive cognac, make a sazerac with it. it's the OG ingredient before whiskey was used, or just make a nice side car, honestly, cognac is just one of those things that again benefits from direct comparison from other things when learning about it, it's very hard to taste drinks on their own unless you have a baseline because you're likely to just make things up.

>any recommendations?
What are you interested in? it's hard to really pick a good starting point anywhere unless you have a set of flavours you're already keen on, you like jager - amari would probably suit you if you're not looking to mix too heavily, Montenegro and Averna, possibly sweet vermouth also. these things are all lower ABV, the abv of vermouth being only 17.5%, jager being only 35% and has added sugars, more so than those whiskeys - probably why you find it more tolerable.

Rittenhouse rye whiskey one day as your lenience to Jagermeister suggest that you like bolder and more aggressive flavours. but maybe in the future, maybe as an order at a bar. it's higher ABV but it's also higher in quality - it feels like a smooth 40%.

Man, it's taken me ages and ages to get to the point where i'm able to taste notes at all, read a lot, learn about how bottles are made, it's one of the only way to understand why some things matter at all.

Try cointreau if you find it.

From your cabinet, Baileys and jaeger is pretty easy to enjoy. Patron is a highshelf tequila, drink it with salt+lime.
The big bottle whiskey.... I think you will dislike it, and wont like it in the long run. Its too much and too strong. You would need to drink many different whiskeys through weeks/months to differentiate.

All in all, you shoud buy way smaller bottles, from way more kind of drinks. Test it 1 or 2 a day with dinner.
But i am 30 and i know, how i was at 20. So go for it.

Hello anon I'm an amateur bartender (I make drinks for friends and family during holidays and parties like cocktails or eggnog/wassail/buttered beer for Christmas) And here are some general tips:

>Chilling makes the drink generally a little more palatable for people that find the taste overpowering
>Adding a tiny bit of water will bring out flavours and also take the edge off a little
>The longer something has been aged, generally the smoother, which is why shit is more expensive
>Try cocktails if you wanna experience something boozy but generally sweeter or less "confrontational" that straight sippin hard booze
>if you want, you can add a little simple syrup (Equal parts sugar and water) to a drink to make it more palatable and sweet
