vs microwave - drying; fries, pastries, tendies/nuggets and other crumbed stuff, all comes out hot and crispy - unlike microwave which will make them all soggy.

vs toaster oven - faster, better capacity. You can load 2/3 of the tray (not AS much as in OP's photo, but say, 1/3 less), toss a little mid-way through air-frying, and you have a good heap of the goods you were making done.

OTOH it is possible to over-dry pastry stuff (like pizza leftovers); in that case the toaster oven is better. And it is slower than microwave, and less versatile - pretty much useless for soups, stews etc.

there’s nothing wrong with it per se, but I have never known someone who owns one of these who knows how it works and why it makes food so crispy, which shows that they don’t understand the underlying principles of cooking. I’ve literally heard people say “you HAVE to get one anon, it’s like magic, it makes fries crispy like nothing else!” which just isn’t true, they just don’t know how to use the convection setting on their oven.

sure it’s slightly faster for crisping up small batches of food or cooking like a single pastry, but I’d rather save valuable counter space and just use the oven whenever I need to do something like that, which is rare, and I think most people who know what they’re doing would feel the same.

Yeah, mostly. Larger capacity than a toaster oven, and faster, and less hassle with spreading your food thin so it's all evenly fried, but in general if you already have a toaster oven and want to upgrade, get an honest convection oven; the air fryer is barely an upgrade in many respects and a downgrade in a couple others (any bread/pastry stuff can easily be dried to a rock).

You sound like a working class chump. I bet you thought it would be a great "investment", how you would wake up to a warm, healthy breakfast to start off your long day. Maybe, you even had a couple thoughts about all the other nifty little uses you could find for the thing, how it would help you cook healthier meals in general, shed a couple pounds off the old gut, boost your confidence around work and with the ladies. Yeah, maybe that slow cooker would start your life cooking again, wouldn't it? I can see your strained hands holding the box and reading through it carefully at the store. A little bit pricey, but you're the type of guy who thinks everything is more than you can spend, aren't you. And look what happened to you. Look what the slow cooker did to you. Fucked you over, and made you clean it like a useless bitch. You don't even fucking like oatmeal. Piece of shit, you've been repeating those three words your whole life, haven't you. Yeah, how was work after that piece of shit fucked you over? I bet it was on your mind the whole day, you probably didn't say shit to nobody. Can't be telling people about your mistakes. How your little fix yourself plan, failed you. Don't want people to start thinking you're the failure. You're the piece of shit, all along. You don't want that do you? You don't want to be the piece of shit everybody secretly whispers about, do you? Was your father a piece of shit like you? I bet he never had a slow cooker. He had a woman, a house, a damn good job. I bet it's slow cooking you the fuck alive, isn't it. Comparing yourself to him. How one day when all the steam runs our of your life, you'll discover how you're nothing more than burnt shit to be scrapped off and thrown in the trash.

Oh, hello. I own one.

A fan propels air through a heater spiral, heating it to oven temperatures and forcing it around and through food, then blowing it out the back of the device alongside with any steam given out by the food (so it gets crispy, not soggy). The forced air circulation distributes heat faster and more efficiently than a classic (radiative) oven / toaster oven, and is more efficient at removing moisture (which may be desired or not). It's the same principle as a convection oven, except miniaturized and made significantly cheaper.

That's about it regarding the science of air fryers. Now you know someone who owns an air fryer and knows how it works.

I thought they were complete gimmicks until my girlfriend bought one and now I use it several times a week. It's so much better for reheating food than a microwave that makes everything all soggy or the oven which usually just dries stuff out, especially fried food.

a fucking $30 toaster oven ($50 for one with convection) will cook at 450F (toast/bake/broil) and have a shitton more utility, including cooking a whole 12" pizza. you can cook anything in them an air fryer does including chicken nuggers, 4 whole chicken legs/thighs, a rack full of bacon, cakes, cookies etc. unitaskers like air fryers are a fucking meme.

Serious question, do these things actually work for cooking raw, breaded food? Would the results be anything similar to deep frying?

>> No.17008244

I have one. It is really nice. My old appartment in Tokyo had a fish oven and I think the air fryer did a better job of making fish or hot dogs or whatever. It makes things crispy, but frying french fries, like in the picture, or mozarella sticks... I think deep frying is better for foods that are traditionally deep fried.

No, it's literally just a tiny oven. It does not replicate the effects of hot oil on food, the term "Air Fryer" is all marketing. It's similar to a very clean oven.
