If you're asking for real, the answer is that they found making customers pay $0.25 for a cart (which they get back at the end of the trip) made people less likely to steal carts and also eliminated the need to hire cart wranglers. This means lower operational costs for Aldi (most stores have 2-3 people working), which means lower prices.

I love my chunky Aldi milk; most stores only have smooth. Aldi also routinely sells "high meat", which most supermarkets refuse to stock due to draconian health-code rules. The outrushing of green gas from opening an Aldi freezer door is usually enough to get me fucked up for hours, and that's a value-added proposition that dumpster behind Olive Garden just can't compete with. Really though, if I want to go to aldi I just snatch a cart that's laying around in the store. But usually I'm of a mind that I'd rather starve than play stupid euro games with shopping carts.

>> No.16867621

>>16867565
A publicity photo proves nothing. Before carts you would walk in and say what you want, and they got it all for you and carried it out for you. You think they went directly from that to the shopper being happy to not only do their own collection and bring it out to their cars, but to then return after they've got everything they need? You have been trained to expect less service and are no true American.

The constant focus on your goals, and the burning desire to win, together with the glorious uncertaintiy and adrenaline that comes from having a go, are the true joys of life.

Not sitting on your butt knocking others, while the rolling a fat cigarette and waiting for the next handout.

Bitching that the world will not dedicate itself to making you happy. Success in life for some is how much money you have. Well I don’t subscribe to that. I know plenty of sad sacks that could buy and sell me with the blink of an eyelid. The only time money meant something to me and Lynn was when we had none. I’ll never forget the time the bank wanted my house. My success is spending my life the way I want to spend it. And that surely is the true meaning of life. I believe that we should not be a servant to anyone’s authority, no matter what walk of life we’re from. If life’s not good enough, change it! Get out and have a go. The worst that can happen is that you fall over. So what! Get up and go and again. Yibbida yibbida is death, and that’s the end of everything, in my mind anyway.

No, Americans historically brought the carts back because they instinctively knew it was their duty to do so after taking one to use. People used to have a stronger sense of virtue and did little things like that because they believed it was morally good and kept society feeling more proper. The “fuck you not my problem” mentality didn’t exist until the 1960s, when boomers decided to relentlessly take advantage of all the societal gifts that they took for granted. Unaware that the reason they could be such little shits who put no effort into social maintenance is because the older generations were willing to pick up the slack and do it for them. Once those older generations died off, there was no one left to clean up after the “not my problem” types.

Do you think people used to wear 3-piece suits and a hat every day because their jobs required it? They did it because they believed if they put effort into being presentable and respectable, then it would influence others into doing the same. And this peer pressure would contribute to keeping society civil and safe. People actually used to give a shit, if you weren’t aware.

I noticed a recent flaring of this mindset. I'm 21, I could have stayed home and lived comfortable off welfare for a long time. But I didn't want to. I applied for a warehouse job that offered more than enough to live on 200 miles from home, filled a backpack and got a bus ticket.

I think it’s because the current generation is the most mollycoddled in history. They never progressed beyond the “authority figure will take care of it” mindset that little kids have. This combined with western society having all concept of spirituality beaten out of them because it is “obsolete superstition” has led to most younger people expecting society to take care of their material wants/needs the same way their parents did and being unable to find happiness in anything other than material possessions.

This is unironically true, theres a reason why the number of shops with coin-access shopping carts increases in areas that are poorer (and by extension, more "diverse"). In the UK, Waitrose does not require you to insert money to access a trolley because it trusts it's customers to not steal the trolleys, Aldi do not trust their customers and so have coin slots required to use shopping carts.
