I like this thermo cafe just because it's like 450ml so I can make a huge mug of tea or coffee and have it stay hot enough to drink the whole way through.

This is quite a funny one. It shows some bears "playing" in an adult manner. Backstory about this mug, I found it on the ground at a park. I didn't even realize what the bears were doing until a week later. Turns out there's a whole 1984 Taylor & Ng 'animal orgy' series with different animals, I've been looking for the other ones in the series for many years but haven't found any. I have a rule that I can't buy mugs online, I have to find them when I'm out and about or get them as gifts

Thanks, and yeah it does lol

Something strange about these two is that they definitely belonged to people who are now dead. I assume that most of the mugs in thrift stores belonged to dead people but these ones definitely. When I drink out of someone else's 'best grandma' mug it really gives me some kind of feeling. It makes me remember about how short lifespans are, maybe. All of my mugs will outlive me and my sister will probably put them in a thrift store when I'm dead. What's it all for, then?

This one was made by my friend Esteban's mom who got into pottery making as a hobby. I always thought the "traditional Mexican mug shape" was just a meme but it's actually extremely ergonomic. The flared lip stays cool and is easy to hold, even more comfortable than a European handled mug I would say.

Bro, love those little egg mugs, they are very cute.

Here's another wacky one to showcase, "it's one of those days" really reminds me of Garfield or similar boomer's humor about having to work. That's not a trick of perspective, the mug is really slanted like it's having one of those days. It's surprisingly feasible to actually use.

Here are my three favourite. First one was a gift from a sweet old Japanese lady who makes them, for helping her setup her stand at a show I was a part of, the sailor guy is a tad small but I love him nonetheless, and the last one is made in France of black glass in the late 80's early 90's. Back from work. My biggest mugs (pos IKEA mug for size reference), bought in Poland. I was looking for something to buy at the tourist market, and there was this big ugly tourist mug, with lots of heraldry and landmarks, but you couldn't drink out of the mug, you had to have a small stainless steel cup insert (and it was €40). But I found a potter at the same market who was throwing ceramics that had finished products on display, and I bought the blue 75 cl mug for €5 and the 1.5 litre brown mug for €8. I fill the large mug to the brim with coffee when I know I have to be up for 24 hours.

Of course it got tilted. I bought these three in Japan, the large brown one is very coarse and I only hand wash it. It is very asymmetrical, which makes it interesting to hold. The blue one is also quite large, I think those two have pretty much the same volume. It is very smooth and I like the colors and patterns. The last one feels like it is made for holding both palms around the rounded top part, as I get the feeling it would schwopp out of my hand if I held the bottom part tightly.

God damnit, why do the pics get tilted? They look normal when I have them saved to my desktop. Anyway, the mug on the left reads "Home fucking is killing prostitution. Keep hookers employed, they need to eat too." A friend of mine bought it when he visited Amsterdam. The other mug is christmas themed, featuring trolls painted by now-deceased Rolf Lidberg. He was famous for his maximum comfy troll paintings, I recommend you google his name if you want cozy feels.

Last of my more noteworthy mugs (also from Japan), the rest are just IKEA or the like. These are also my best mugs imo. The low blue mug is very finely painted, and it is actually grooved which gives a very nice tactile feeling. The last one... I don't know how the potter did it, but it looks like singed birch bark to me which gives me a nostalgia trip to my wood-fired childhood home. I think I bought these mugs for about €50 each.

>God damnit, why do the pics get tilted? They look normal when I have them saved to my desktop
Because your phone saved the rotation as EXIF data rather than actually rendering the image in the correct orientation, and 4chan strips EXIF data from uploaded images so you don't get doxxed (your phone will also have saved the GPS coordinates of where you were when you took the picture in EXIF data). Just copy it into a new image in paint or something and that'll save it properly.

Less often than most people because I see good pots all the time, but yeah, I know what you're talking about. For functional stuff it happens when there's something that was just so perfectly executed in one obviously deft movement that it looks alive, or imprinted with a piece of living soul. And you just know there were 10,000 shittier ones made before that perfect moment was frozen in clay. Other times there's a form that fits so perfectly in your hand that it feels part of you and you start to philosophize about the nature of being human and human existence. And for glazes:

>> No.16867886

When you're familiar with the different natures of glaze type and understand what these ones do or those ones do/look like you start to recognize tiers of craftsmanship.

1. Look at me, look at this flashy, difficult glaze type I used.

2. I have bent the glaze to my will. It has done exactly what I wanted it to do.

3. I listened to the glaze and it told me what it is and I made a pot that it wanted. I let it be itself.

Nah. I'm the potter from above. I taught ceramics classes for years and years. When students wanted to do shit like that it was fun as fuck. I'd do little impromptu sculpting lessons of tits or dicks or whatever they needed help with. Unsurprisingly, most potters are pretty down to earth. Although there ARE cliques of prudish little old lady potters everywhere, they are almost never the instructors or cult of personality workshop presenters. We can get ourselves in trouble for keeping it too real, so we end up attempting to present a racy lesson in a professional demeanor (which is hilarious in itself). Teaching art is like that.
A goatse mug would have been legendary in my studio.
