they're what alcoholics order to get drunk most efficiently. kinda depends on the bar, but because you're adding so many different hard liquors it's harder to fuck you on the pour. some places will charge more or up the ice (even more than they already do) to kind of mitigate this, but more often than not it's the best choice for getting your fix extremely quickly. I used to order two at a time and just burn through them for a nice base buzz. they will definitely keep an eye on you if you do this, though.

I especially appreciate how your description implies the heavy dutyness of long island iced tea. When my friends call me a "faggot" for sipping so slowly, they usually end up getting one as well and more often than not they go overboard and on the third one they are on their way to some corner to throw up, because they chugged them down like a pint of beer. (We are sadly not alcoholics, so few can handle our liquor.)

I am just so bewildered by how the drink can be so infamous, but people still completely misinterpret what kind of drink it actually is.

this is exactly what I mean. you think you have to be familiar with the person on some level for them to engage you in conversation. that's one of the best things about bars - you meet NEW people and if you aren't a social reject you can speak with any of them at great length and have a really nice time. this is especially true when everyone is at least buzzed, if not sloshed completely. if you can't banter with random drunks in a bar then the problem is definitely you.

I used to bartend and I had a regular - middle aged, sleazebag named Johnny who was forever stuck in the 80's - that dirtbag would order a top-shelf long island about half the time he came in.

It's not significantly higher than a whiskey sour, an Old Fashioned or any "classic" cocktail because it follows the pattern and ends up with around 2 to 3 oz of 40% alcohol in there, which is basically 2-3 shots in one drink.

I tend the bar at my restaurant. The only people who order these are people who wanna get fucked up (which is fine) and people who don't know anything else on our cocktail list but still want to drink.
I order them because I make them myself without tequila and it's only $5 plus I give myself a refill about halfway. I'll start it an hour before close, top up before walking home.
