I'm road tripping from North Carolina to Boston next month, and checking out all the New England states for a week after I get there.
What are the best foods/restaurants to try in the north or along the way?

In Connecticut:

* New Haven-style pizza. Thin chewy crust, baked in a coal-fired oven. Try Frank Pepe's, a local chain with multiple locations throughout the state. Some locals may prefer other pizzerias, but Pepe's is easy to find and one of the OGs. (Note: The New Haven location can be a shitshow on weekends.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Haven-style_pizza
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepe%27s
https://www.pepespizzeria.com/

*Steamed cheeseburgers
>What makes the steamed cheeseburger different from typical cheeseburgers is the way it is prepared. Instead of being fried in a pan or grilled on a grill, it is steamed in a stainless-steel cabinet containing trays that hold either a hamburger patty or a chunk of cheese. This method of cooking makes the fats in the meat melt away and they are then drained from the tray once the patty is fully cooked. The end result is a moist, juicy burger which is then served by scooping the meat onto a bun and then pouring the melted cheese over the meat.

If you will be going through Hartford on I-91 (rather than sticking to I-95 closer the coast), then try Ted's in Meriden, not too far off the highway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamed_cheeseburger
https://tedsrestaurant.com

Neither of these will be mind-blowing, but they are considered "notable" and you can say you tried them. If you were coming earlier, I might suggest lobster rolls too, but I do not know how many lobster-roll joints will still be open in October.

Also, since you will probably be coming through New Haven.... if you like beer, then note that several craft breweries are within a few miles off the highway in New Haven and nearby Branford:

Still haven't tried that place since it sounds like such a meme (albeit an ancient meme). Are the burgers really any good? With their whole "our way or the highway" thing it sounds like those cheesesteak-nazi places in Philly that you try once as a tourist. (But then again, that's what OP is doing...)

If you want a nice lunch, Barking Crab in Boston is a larff and legit good food if you want to keep it informal. However, the Union Oyster House is probably the #1 place to go in Boston; it's been there like 200 years and every meal is amazing, plus the atmosphere and vibe of that restaurant is just aces.

If you want something different, the comfiest of Boston food experiences is in the North End (only 10m walk from Union Oyster). Don't be in a hurry, book yourself into one (literally any) of the Italian places and have a proper dinner. Whether you do Union Oyster or a North End place (or both) save your money ahead of time for that meal(s). It's worth indulging the shit is fucking cash and you want to have a good time.

Then after your coffee go for a wander down the brick gas lamp-lit sidewalks of the North End and explore a bit. Boston is best city.

Personally, I recommend sticking to the American national standard: McDonald's famous hamburger restaurant. The thing is, when you're travelling in an distant land, you never know what you're gonna get at the neighborhood greasy spoon. Will they use disgusting "local" ingredients? Will the waitress laugh at your attempt to order without the correct regional dialect? Will the other patrons stare at your outlandish clothing and foreign manners? Will a gang of truckers "run a train" on you in the bathroom?

Why take a chance, when all of your familiar favorite dishes are readily available at the local McDonald's franchise, never more than two miles away? Don't add to the stress of travelling by trying to navigate Yelp recommendations for some sloppa that may give you food poisoning. Instead, treat yourself to a little "home away from home" with a McDonald's hamburger, chicken nuggers, french fries, and a refreshing fountain beverage. And be sure to try the hip new Trayvon Scott Meal (limited time only)! What a great restaurant.

I'll add onto this with some places to go outside of the main downtown area. If you can make it out to the Fenway area you should try:
> Citizens Public House and Oyster Bar
Nice whiskey and Oyster bar thats 2 blocks from Fenway. Can be a little on the expensive side and sometimes busy but its one of my favorite whiskey bars in the city
>Woodys Grill and Tap
Nice little pizza bar just through the fens, maybe 15 minute walk from the park. Really good pizza, good beers on draft, and a nice cozy, baseball themed atmosphere, and my favorite place to watch a Sox game when I'm in the area. Even though its in a busy area, its pretty tucked away so its not super busy except at peak times.
>Timout Market place
Kind of like an upscale mall food court, but its worth checking out. They have rotating pop up kitchen areas where different restaurants come from all around the area to showcase what they're got to offer

If you're looking to go a little farther out I'd recommend heading to Coolidge Corner in Brookline for a day. There's the old theater which is always a good time, you can go to the booksmith, just do shopping at the local stores, or even just head over to the area for dinner/lunch only then head back to fenway (they're about a 30-45 minute walk from each other, or a 20 minute ride on the T)
>michaels deli
Breakfast/lunch deli style sandwich shop. Pretty good stuff but desu I think its a little overrated.
>Allium
Hipster store but their coffee is probably the best you'll get in that area (and arguably most of Boston). Sandwiches are pretty food albeit a little overpriced
>Ganko Ittetsu Ramen
Personally my favorite ramen in the greater Boston area, don't do takeout though, the interior is modeled like an old Japanese ramen house, very comfy and everything is made to order

If you have a specific area you'll be in Boston, I can give some more recommendations

My man. I love that whole little area and agreed, Ganko is great. Actually a surprisingly good amount of Asian food within like a mile radius of Coolidge Corner. Better off going to New York, or ideally, Montreal whos smoked meat mogs pretty much any pastrami I've had south of the border. Amazing bagels and food in general up there too.

>>16735089
Boston has good Chinese food if that's your thing. Best is in Quincy which is basically where most of the Asians(predominantly Chinese) have setup because Chinatown is way to expensive being in the heart of downtown. It's a bit of a drive tho.

South Garden has crazy good Cantonese seafood/food- salt and pepper anything, surf clams with garlic vermicelli, soy sauce steamed fish, and their crispy garlic chicken. Best I've had outside of Hong Kong. You also pass through Dorchester where a lot of the Vietnam fucking shits live, and obviously has great Viet food.

Likewise, you'd be remiss to not get a fried seafood platter. Woodmans in essex is the classic but it's basically an overpriced tourist trap - still good tho. I usually end up going to New Bedford(Kylers or Genes) for that stuff, and also get your fill of amazing Portuguese food down there but you can find good ones basically anywhere along the coast.

The other "classic" Boston food is the roast beef sandwich - rare roast beef on an onion roll with horseradish, BBQ, cheese. Good, sloppy shit and what arby dreams it could be but don't expect it to be revolutionary. If you find yourself in the north shore or anywhere near nicks, or frankly, anything but Kelly's, it's still worth a try.

You said all the NE states so here’s my essential Rhode Island food stops (for a tourist):

>Calamari
It’s the official state appetizer. They catch it off Pt. Judith, so I like to get it near there. George’s of Galilee is my favorite spot to eat seafood and watch the waves.

>Del’s Lemonade
It’s a Rhode Island thing that’s hard to explain to outsiders. There are Del’s locations all over, but it’s best from a truck on the beach.

>Clam Cakes & Dough Boys
Another couple of ‘only in RI’ items. Iggy’s in Narragansett is a good spot for both.

>Coffee Cabinet
It’s like a coffee milkshake. Newport Creamery is good for them. Get an Awful Awful while you’re there.

>Stuffies
It’s a quahog clam stuffed with a bread based stuffing and baked. Finn’s Harborside in East Greenwich has good ones.

>NY System Hot Weiners
or ‘gaggers’. It’s a veal and pork wiener on a steamed bun with meat sauce, onions, celery salt and mustard. Go to Olneyville NY System and get some.

I absolutely detest Boston and will never set food in that city again. My first boyfriend was from Boston. His accent annoyed me so much at first but then I grew to love it. He was also abrasive and aggressive in many ways but it was sort of a nice change and I’m more of a quiet type who likes to try to please everyone. He brought me out of my shell and I lost my virginity to him and thought we might stay together forever. We visited Boston a few times but he told me he had no family there. I ended up moving to Boston with him after college and it was six months of bliss although he was often evasive and acted strange when we were out, insisting on avoiding some areas and not wanting to show any affection (even holding hands) despite being all over me where we previously lived.

One day we were out walking at the Boston Harbour and ran into who other than HIS PARENTS. He didn’t even introduce me and I turned white and started shaking, my head was spinning and I couldn’t fathom why he would be ashamed of me like that. I ended up balling and walking away fast and ended up walking all the way to a bar in South End. I got drunk and went home with two guys and it was humiliating when I sobered up. I eventually called him, told him to give me a few hours alone in the apartment and ignored his apologies and explanations. I went to the apartment, grabbed what I needed and moved back with my parents. And here I am still with them depressed in my childhood home while my father tries to convince me to go into conversion therapy. Now I dream about that time I had two dongs in my bussy because it was the last time I had sex, three years ago in November.

Yeah not to be a Brookline snob or anything, but that's on the shittier side of town and might as well be Allston. Not to say that you didn't have great memories there or that it wasn't fun lol. I lived all over and around over the years and have some awesome nostalgia of just about everywhere memorable lol.

I have an odd random memory of a girl kissing and awkwardly squeezing me close before she told me she loved me in that Coolidge Corner Theater nook somewhere along that ledge and I thought I was gonna pass out. I really liked her and everything, but I was young and wasn't ready for that many emotions all at once.

I have so more weird memories all along Harvard Ave and down the many streets and outward arteries towards Boston. I used to date a girl down in Allston by Great Scott that loved to throw crazy parties. I kind of got the piss beat out of me at one of them and still have a scar from (I think) the coward's ring around my left eyebrow when I lift it years later. My only consolation is that I cracked his cheekbone with my elbow lol.

I spent lots of time in the coolidge crn neighbourhood though, it's like a 10min walk through Brookline which is nicer than going down to scummy Harvard Ave for coffees and junk

Sometimes ancient memes can be fun. Just try it with an open mind. If you like it, great. If you don't, that's cool too. Personally, I like it.

I'm iffy on the RI statement, but agree south coast MA has the best food.
Go to a Portuguese restaurant in New Bedford, or Turks seafood in Mattapoisett!

I am from Lynn, grew up hanging around Salem. Boston is a fucking shithole and so is the surrounding area. There is NO food worth visiting this place for.

Why the fuck would you go all the way to New York to go to bubba Gump shrimp they have one in South Carolina and in Tennessee (they have a whole bunch of other locations but those are probably the two closest to you)
Also the menu looks like a Touist trap I imagine it'll be like an overpriced Red lobster

Hey, if you hit New Hampshire, stay the fuck away from Beach Pea. It's a tourist trap.
Spend a night here in Portsmouth and hit all the local downtown eateries. Breakfast at the Friendly Toast, lunch at Street, dinner at the Goat, drinks/nightlife at the Wilder until last call, then Gilley's for some drunken greaseburger.
If you see a fat gutted young man walking around with a fishing pole (and/or fish) and a cat on a leash, please say hi to me.

Although I agree I love Vermont and the food scene, hope to move up there some day when I have the money

If you want to sample Maine, try Ogunquit. Quintessential beach town and fantastic food. Try the Crooked Pine for dinner.

Also, for the most picturesque fishing village, go to Bear Skin Neck in Rockport, MA
