Yes, and? It's typically eaten with corn bread (starch component) and some fresh vegetables like green beans or corn on the cob. It's not really intended to be a well-rounded meal, though. It's just a simple goulash-style stomach filler that could be prepared from dried ingredients and feed a large number of hungry farmhands/cowboys.

>> No.16723955

>>16723929
Not that person but fuck no. There's an argument to be made for adding some tomato paste for flavor but chili is not a tomato-based dish by any means.

Main components of actual chili are
>Meat (generally beef and/or pork)
>Chilis and spices (different from person to person but pretty much always includes things like cumin, paprika, garlic/onion)
>Braising liquid (people who enjoy food will use a good beer for this, but you can get away with stock or even water if times are tough)

Everything else is optional, but what OP posted is tomato sauce with beans.

Don't put words in my mouth. God you're insufferable.

If I put some tomatoes on carbonara its still carbonara, just carbonara with tomatoes which doesn't sound very good but thats not the point. If I do the same with chili but with tomatoes its not just me adding tomatoes to spicy stew, its just me adding tomatoes to chili.

>> No.16724031

>>16724013
What OP posted and what is being discussed is not "chili with tomatoes in it". It's "tomato sauce with peppers and beans". They're fundamentally different dishes retard, because tomatoes are the base of the dish. Is chicken soup the same thing as a roast chicken with a cup of water dumped on it?

>> No.16724044

>>16724031
>tomatoes are the base of the dish
No that would be the spice blend comprising of various chili powders and such.

having tomatoes does not make it the "base of the dish". going back to carbonara, if I add some tomatoes they don't suddenly become the base of the dish they just become another part of it. The tomatoes in chili do more for color than anything else.
