This is not only the best mead I've ever had, it's the best alcoholic beverage I've ever had. It tastes like drinking a bouquet of flowers mixed with honey. I'm not speaking metaphorically. It literally smells and tastes like actual flowers. As it should, since honey is made out of flower pollen.

tried making my own mead once. it also smelled and tasted like a field of flowers. sadly i contaminated the batch later

Made some back in the day when Tepache had a constant brewing thread up on /ck/, it was a simple Ancient Orange Mead but it ended up pretty decent even with no experience or special equipment. Never had a commercial mead but I can imagine they're pretty good.

There might be a more updated version, but I'm pretty sure this is the one that was passed around at the time and the one I used:

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/threads/joes-ancient-orange-mead.49106/

Dug through my photos and remembered I made it alongside a cider, I don't think that took as well to the really simple process.

Yeah back in the day they relied on wild yeast, but after enough time, brewers would use trub (yeast residue) from ‘good’ batches to make subsequent batches. Fast forward 100 years and you have a pretty good selectively bred mother culture.
