Well I used to drink hard and fast. Like a pint in an hour to be good for 6 hours, then the next pint at night. I did that for about a year straight, and got withdrawal for the first time, which shocked me, (never even knew there was withdrawal from alcohol).. the more times you go through withdrawal, the easier it is to experience it. That is called the Kindling Effect. Now, if I even drink for 3 days straight, I get withdrawal. But yes, once I start drinking, I'm terrified of withdrawal, so spread the fifth throughout the day, and wake up at night to take drinks to fall back asleep. So 24/7.

Hmm. Naltrexone works pretty well. I've only taken it to break a cycle, not routinely though. Look into that. Maintenance drinking is drinking just enough to stave off withdrawal symptoms and be able to sleep. The goal is not to really get drunk, otherwise you're forced to eat the W/Ds even while still going at it.
