Could be a technique issue as well. Fucking with the bed, either by stirring or swirling can give you a really flat bed, but the trade-off can be a slower drawdown. It can also create channels, meaning some of its over-extracted, and some is under-extracted, which could lead to sourness as well as just a general muddy sort of flavour.

Lads I bought a cafflano kompresso to try to get into espresso and I'm becoming more convinced it doesn't work. It's like an aeropress but they say it makes espresso. I bought what I was told were fresh beans from a local coffeeshop and even bought my own grinder, but no combination of that gets me a good shot. Videos show people using a lot of force and taking around 30 seconds to press it. Mine never have that much resistance despite tamping the everloving shit out of it and I can pull the shot in like seven. The only thing I haven't tried is roasting my own. I've tried pre-infusions, etc. Am I retarded or can you not make good espresso with this thing?

I would just grab the V60. The difference that a brewer makes in the grand scheme of things is pretty miniscule; you can make excellent coffee with any good brewer. The more important thing when you're getting started is having a good grinder and a gooseneck kettle. Those things will make the biggest impact.

If it matters to you though, I like and use V60s the most because they're cheap, filters are readily available, and they have a quick draw-down time.

Chemex is great for a slightly cleaner taste. It's beautiful on the counter, and the brewer being connected to the carafe makes for less moving parts to keep track of. Finally, it's a superior choice if you're making coffee for several folks. My only gripes are that it's slightly harder to clean, the filters take up a lot of space, and sometimes it's annoying if the filter makes a seal in the spout.

I've heard a lot of great things about the Origami; the innovation of being able to use Kalita and V60 filters is really cool. I also heard that it's hard to keep level on a cup, so it might lead to uneven extraction if you're not paying attention.

I think flash brew / japanese style iced coffee is bullshit.

How could this:
>x grams of coffee drips into y grams of ice
be different in anyway from this:
>brew x grams of coffee and then add y grams of ice

If anything, the second method should result in less dilution since the coffee has a very brief time to cool slightly before the ice is added.

None of these venues care for dialing in a coffee to your particular taste. They exist to maximize profit from their current inventory. The fact of the matter is most people(like yourself at this point) are happy drinking shitty coffee, so thats what sells. Currently you are wearing clearance irregular mossimo shirts from target, when for a few hundred bucks you could learn to tailor your clothes.

Yeah I know, I'm just airing out my thoughts. I also only use grocery store bought coffee beans.

9barista looks really coming though. The process of making the shot is really appealing. Not sure how difficult it is to perfect.

A decent grinder. But once you've got that coffee is basically solved. Toss on an $8 plastic v60 and you can mix it up with pourovers. The guy who posts here who has one says its very easy to dial in just off timing the shot.

A grinder (manual is fine) and a scale. The upside to coffee equipment is that you can get a good chunk of your initial investment back if you decide to part with the gear. But seriously if you only are mildly interested in espresso, autistically tinkering and dialling in shots maybe isn't for you.

Worth the asking price imo. I don't think the asking price is unreasonable, considering the company is basically a start up, the product is relatively niche (not mass-produced) and is expensive to machine/fuse parts together

No I totally get that. I just think I'm too casual to actually make good use of it.

I use pic related, in combination with beans that I bought from my local supermarket and I brewed it in my mokapot and I really enjoy the taste and texture better than DeLonghi makers or dripcoffee

I just laugh at the Youtube comments hating on the price - what are they expecting? It's a very solid machine - literally, as it's made of brass. It's my first espresso machine and I couldn't be happier with it. I was looking at the Sage Bambino Plus but reviews are mixed - if a part fails then I'd be out of luck replacing it when the warranty expired. At least with the 9Barista I can buy spare parts to fix it if needed. What works for you is what matters tbqh

Not possible to get shots in the same ballpark as the 9bar with a moka. You don't have the pressure. If you could get the pressure that high, you've now got a cheap thin pipe bomb on your stove.

Depends. If hand grinder, JX Pro is sufficient. Some people say hand grinding for espresso is a pain - I can't comment on it. For electric, G-Iota/DF64 (you might need to align the burrs) or a Niche Zero. Sette 270 but the plastic gearbox isn't ideal. The Eureka line of grinders look good but the adjustment dial looks poorly thought out to me.

Don't listen to this guy, just replace the PRV on your moka pot with one that holds to 9 bar. I'm interested to see your results if you go down this path, why fall for the 9barista scam when you can mod what you own? If the pressure gets too high on your moka pot walls you can just monitor for signs of bulging and turn the heat off if you get scared

Bought the kinu years ago as a "good enough" grinder for mainly espresso while I learned. I've just ordered a weber key a few weeks ago so that should get here in ~oct. Preordered for 1650 free shipping no tax. Going to retail for 2k before shipping and tax I believe. The kinu phoenix I have now at $200 punches well above its price. I'll probably sell it for $160ish when the key arrives. Higher end coffee shit tends to hold its value pretty well.

I am saying there is not going to be any noticeable difference between the following two things:

>17g coffee grounds, pour 125g of hot water through it into a bed of 125g of ice
>17g coffee grounds, pour 125g of hot water through it, then add 125g of ice

The japanese/flash gimmick is brewing onto ice and I don't think that makes a difference relative to adding ice after. In both cases you obviously pour less water through the coffee to account for the water you add at the end (ice).

I mean given you're brewing directly into your drinking vessel which is not over direct heat it probably helps to reduce the chance of burning your brewed coffee if you aren't diligently watching your brew. It does seem like it would be a bitch to deal with excess mess if you take your cup out too early though. Seems like a solution to a made up problem with moka pots
