Well I used to manage a gas station with 4 employees, and never had problems like OP is having. I never expected any employee to be passionate about "climbing the ladder" or some nonsense. As long as people came in and did their work and didn't fuck up too bad there weren't any issues. Never fired anyone, barely even had to tell people to work harder or faster.
