It's also not very difficult to make yourself. Time intensive but not difficult. You will also get light amounts of alcohol which is how it is normally made.

I've had fresh kvass sold on the street while visiting Kazakhstan many years ago, and it was magnificent.
None of the kvass I've tried from Russian stores in the US is all that great, FYI. It's not even close to fresh kvass. Basically a different product. Including brand in OP, it's not great. If you want the real thing, you can make it yourself. Someday I'll be assed to do it.

This. All the kvass I've found in stores near me are like pic related. They're intensely sweet and nearly flat, and there's really no flavor but brown sugar and malt. If you like Malta soda you'll just think it's a shittier version.
You have to make your own, using any dark bread that should have some type of maltose to it. I've used good slightly sweet pumpernickel from bakeries, and I've used B&M canned brown bread mixed with regular dark rye. The trick is to toast it first until slightly burnt. Then add to a jar with fresh raisins, water, and optional sugar, and ferment like wine. Its generally ready in a few days when the raisins turned back into grapes and its bubbly and aromatic. Go as far as you want, but if it gets sour it's getting too old and you want to drink it right away or use it for okroshka soup in the summer.

the bottle stuff is always way too sweet compared to the real thing. just make your own at home. it's piss easy. or go to some ex soviet country and by some on the streets

I have yet to try store bought kvass that tastes anything like fresh kvass sold on the street.

I don't feel like the bar is very high to beat with store bought stuff so this doesn't sound right.

hmmmm I wonder what all that starch ferments into... Perhaps you might know retard?

>> No.16473967

>>16473953
Starch breaks down into sugar, which further breaks down into alcohol and carbon dioxide. I wouldn't really say good homemade kvass has much of a sugary taste to it, but sometimes the storebought stuff tastes like they dumped a couple teaspoons of sugar in after the fact.

Fair, it's pretty niche here too, the same people who make that supermarket kombucha trialed kvass as well but I wasn't as popular so the only place they sell it now is the organic store at the riverside market. I always pick up a bottle or two every time I go into town

It's genuinely not good. Bitter and sour liquidified rye bread. It's a nice novelty to try and it would certainly be different if it's a product you've been having your whole life. But I'd much rather just have a glass of water.

Much like how alcoholics make up 90% of all booze sales, some people exclusively drink soda. They're usually very fat though and unemployed due to said obesity so you're unlikely to meet them unless you're a grocery store clerk
