I don't find it disgusting. Sometimes when I'm tired and it isn't bedtime, I try drinking some to see if it will give me more energy, but it doesn't really do anything. Why? Because my tiredness is genuine, rather than a symptom of caffeine withdrawal, and therefore can't be fixed with coffee.

Light roasts give more flavor from the bean than from the roast alone. Medium is a good mix of the two, and dark roasts are almost all just the roast and none of the bean. I've had some really great light roasts and some hot brown water, so it seriously depends on the quality of the bean. All this being said I prefer a medium roast.

In my quest to collect all the coffee preparation apparata I've got my first espresso-like maker, the cafflano kompresso. Not knowing that much about making espresso at home the $50 price point was attractive. In a rush I bought some Illy bold roast espresso grounds and followed the instructions with the maker, but when I actually press the coffee a 60ml shot takes less than 10 seconds to press fully. The videos I've seen suggest it should take more like 50 to 60, and the resulting espresso I get is not very espresso-like. Using their tamper I've tamped the grounds as hard as I could with my hands. I'm letting it pre-infuse, etc. Do I need finer ground coffee? Is there some counter-intuitive trick here, like if I press harder that actually increases the resistance from the coffee?

Pros: it can make decent espresso and it's not too expensive. At a minimum get the classic, not the neo. The pressure gauge is very is useful though so I'd suggest the signature (or better)

Cons: it can take a while to go through the process to make a shot. It's a bit laborious. If you want to make additional shots realistically I think you would be better off buying multiple baskets for it. If you're using a hand grinder, that also takes additional time.

Overall its a good beginner option if paired with a good grinder. You can get a flair and 1zpresso for £350 and that's all you really need. However, if you don't want to spent 5-10 minutes each time you make a shot then I'd go for something else

Ordered a macchiato the other day at some random cafe because they gave me a voucher for a free coffee when I finished shopping at the fancy grocers' next door.

The woman asked me if I wanted it 'long'. I asked what she meant. She said she meant to ask if I wanted extra milk in it.

Am I ignorant or is the woman retarded? Doesn't 'long' usually mean extra water? How is it still a macchiato if it has extra water or extra milk? Isn't the ratio definitive?

>creating a product that is either overly sweet and/or with no body at all.
Sweetness is rarely a powerful trait in black coffee, and I find it usually shows up in more balanced cups like when I roast medium or even medium-dark. Light roasts can be sweet, but usually it's faint and overpowered by the acidity light roasts are known for. Furthermore body is more a factor of the bean's growth and brew method than how it was roasted.

I haven't recently - the machine isn't designed for this. When I first got the machine, I wasn't tightening the portafilter enough and got ~20 grams output. Grind size varies by bean, and you may need to adjust it as the beans 'age'. On my DF64, sometimes I'm at 19, sometimes 10. If you do get the 9Barista, get a WDT tool or make your own, and get a 53mm funnel to transfer the beans from the dosing cup to the portafilter. And remember, you don't really want the machine to be on the hob for more than ~7 minutes at a time.

Region: Lake Atitlan

This region encompasses all of the lands surrounding Lake Atitlan. Coffee is mainly harvested on the side of the Pacific in a region of three volcanic mountains with a high precipitation.
There are five volcanic regions in Guatemala, and the soil of Atitlán is the richest in terms of its organic matter. In fact, ninety percent of Atitlán’s coffee is cultivated on the sides of the volcanoes surrounding the majestic Lake Atitlán. There is 50 mm of rain every month in this region. Most coffee producers in this region will use water from the lake for wet processing. Instead of chemicals, organic matter is often used as a fertilizer. The high altitude (4,000-5,900 feet) results in a low occurrence of pests and diseases. Yet it’s not only the soil that impacts Atitlán’s coffee: winds known as Xocomil influence the region’s microclimates.

Producer: Tinamit Tolinan Cooperative

Tasting Notes:

Clean, honey sweet well balanced cup with hints of cherry/plum and nice chocolate tones.

Dark roasts will taste like ass (and strongly so) at most grind settings. Usually people use a coarse grind to underextract to reduce the bitterness. Which is retarded, because why buy a dark roast if you don't want the same smokey, charred, bitter nonsense as the last time you had a dark roast?

Many flavorful compounds develop and then change and are destroyed during roasting. A light roast aims to avoid the destruction part, and to reduce the amount of darker maillard compounds. This leads to greater variation, more complexity, less bitterness, and a flavor profile closer to what we've evolved to prefer.

I recommend pushing your grind finer until either drawdown stalls or it becomes over extracted. You might find the that the taste develops a bit better. Once you know where you CAN brew, decide where you want to brew. Coarser grinds are generally a waste of time in a V60 simply because you can't get them to extract properly. Insulated french press and long brew times are what I would do if you want to go coarser

if it tastes like shit it wasn't the perfect shot. each bean is different, so you have to experiment with variables to balance the flavour. light roasts are harder to extract, you have to grind finer and brew hotter, which yeah runs the risk of fucking them. the whole point of tasting is to dial by flavour. a 28 second shot of 18g of coffee with a 1:2 ratio is not by any means going to suit every bean you brew with.
