I used to drink $7 1.75's of vodka and would go a while between going to the liquor store, so I'd run (literally) to the corner store to buy natty daddy because it was $1 a can once in a while and hate them. I've started drinking mostly beer at this point (and my extra 20 pounds has shows it).
I decided to go back to most of the malt liquors I tried for a second taste while it's actually cold and think about the flavors. The real problem with them is the sweetness. Natural Father isn't particularly bad at first taste, until the aftertaste hits, then it's pretty bad.. I don't remember steel reserve, I was probably drunk at the time, not pleasant either. I think ice house edge is okay, had two recently, not as sweet. But with the 8 percents they might seem okay at first, but further down the 25 ounce can you get the sweetness starts getting tto you,
I haven't had any other ice beers, but natural ice was good at first (because I only every drank natty) but I don't like it anymore aside from the calories to abv.
I tried colt 45 out of a glass bottle recently, was okay, didn't care for it too much.
I had Olde English 800 a week later, I would say it's pretty good, just seemed like a solid beer. Would like to find a can of it and try it a second time.

Last week I saw the local beer store had Carlsberg Elephant in and I tried a can. It was after I drank the rest of the beer I bought, but it seemed very good compared to the 7.2 abv, just a bit sweet.
I think it's because it follows Reinheitsgebot, so it doesn't have any of the adjuncts that cause they extreme sweetness in domestic large US brewer made malt liquors. Going to try another can this weekend.

Are there any British alkies in this thread? I've got a couple weeks off but don't have an awful lot of money, but I'd still like to get drunk at least every other day. What's the best value to booze ratio? The cheapest bottle of spirits I can see in any local shops for me is 9.75, for some tesco vodka at 37.5%. Tesco also has 2l bottles of cider for £2.05 that are 5%, so that's the best value I've seen but if possible I'd rather not drink 6l of cider if possible since it tastes like piss. Is there a better option out there?

I see the local alkies carry round that Henry Weston's stuff, is that tolerable?

Yeah that was my thinking. A 700ml bottle of vodka is 1400 calories or so, which isn't great but I can still eat stuff. 12 pints of that cider is pushing 3000 calories, so I'm paying an extra couple of quid to not become massively overweight while getting drunk

I did go to Lidl and found they have an 8.1% cider for 1.50 a pint which is pretty good, so I got a box of 6 to try and beat steeler guy in the video. Lidl has some really good booze though for cheap, I didn't realize it was so good. I'm currently drinking a 12 year aged whiskey from there for £15 which is at least the equivalent of the bottle of Tomatin I got as a birthday present last year. I also picked up some Parma violet gin and a bottle of Kopparberg gin since I do like Kopparberg. I'd recommend going booze shopping at lidll/aldi if you can

i'll give you an abridged version. alcohol gets broken down to acetaldehyde and further into acetic acid (vinegar).
acetaldehyde is the nasty one. hangovers, cancer, etc. the problem is that the enzyme used in breaking down acetaldehyde to acetic acid can get used up, so the acetaldehyde sticks around longer.
glutathione is the compound used by your liver to break down alcohol. you can't supplement glutathione, because it gets broken down, but acetylcysteine acts as a precursor.
basically, the purpose of taking acetylcysteine is to buffer your glutathione, so your liver can fully metabolize the alcohol.

acetaldehyde is involved in hangovers. some east asians have a deficiency in their liver enzymes which leads to a buildup of acetaldehyde. disulfiram also blocks this enzyme, and is given to alcoholics to "force a hangover" whenever they drink.

however, the studies ive read show that when taking acetylcysteine, there is very little liver damage which occurs, and it's almost equivalent to not being exposed to alcohol at all.

there are many studies on this. many focus on hangover reduction, and reduction in alcohol cravings, but there is also good data on liver damage mitigation.
