yeah that was my first mistake as I wanted to give a good cleaning (no clue how dirt it was at the store), and tainted dripping all over the place, but the varnish is still there as you can tell, does it need to be a special kind not to fuck up temperature or smoke?

A thin layer of cake can help insulate the pipe from higher temperatures but I think smoking cadence and proper packing are more important in that regard.

There are some who use rubbing alcohol, especially with a salt+alcohol treatment but I prefer to use potable alcohol for normal cleaning - less risk when I am putting the pipe in my mouth after cleaning.

I would say just avoid goopy aromatic tobacco for your first few smokes - I like something light, dry smoking and neutral like Carter Hall for the first couple of smokes. It tends to burn all the way down without leaving much dottle so the cake forms more evenly.

this is coming from a long time ex smoker who used to roll up cigarettes with pipe tobacco and filters, because as you said it, the taste is so much better
but pipe is a whole nother deal, the smoke is heavy and will give you a bad hang over, but not only that, inhaling hot and heavy may even be too much that you might choke on it

You want to ideally be sipping at your pipe, taking your time, enjoying the experience, not chugging down like it's a cold beer on a hot day.
Just overturning the pipe over an ashtray and the loose ash falls out while the tobacc at the bottom stays in, even tapping the pipe gently while upside down doesn't remove any tobacco for me, just the ash. You might want to try packing a little tighter/denser if everything else starts falling out on you.
A lot of people smoke to near the end of the bowl and just turf out the little bit of tobacco left over, you're not obliged to smoke it all the way through, and it usually doesn't taste the best at that point anyway.
