Been to a few and usually it’s ok. Last two I went to were Smith&wollenskys and this Asian place called Tao…

Tao was painfully average food for way overpriced stuff but S&W was good steaks and quality food for about average steakhouse prices. Overall best steakhouse I’ve been to that’s upscale

Yeah. A steakhouse in Paris. There is no menu, the only thing they ask you as you sit down is how you like your meat. Then they bring you a light salad as an appetizer, and then your steak along with a mountain of fries. The steak is absolutely divine, and they use some secret sauce that matches the meat's taste just right. Most expensive meal of my life, but so damn good.

We still pee and poo and get cancer just like you do.

And when we do we feel just as bad as you do.

We think about working too hard and not spending enough time with our loved ones, just like you.

It's time to grow up.

I don't understand why you'd go to an expensive steak house. If you buy a high quality steak and reverse sear it, it'll be basically as good. I go to restaurants to eat stuff I can't make at home.

>really, really fancy restaurant
If you mean by experience and price, yes in Chicago, LA, Tokyo, etc. Music, servers who have a refined sense of service, dishes you can't really get anywhere else (in a good way), rare/valuable ingredients, high-profile clientele, etc.
However, I generally find those places to be overblown. Not bad, just have no need for them unless someone I know wants to go or is treating me.
>fancy restaurant
Annie Gunn's has been my go-to place to have a quality meal with family/acquaintances:
https://www.anniegunns.com/
Not super fancy compared to some places I've been - they stick to good servers and good food with some nice private rooms - but if anyone is telling me it isn't upscale and quality they're fooling themselves. Consistently best steak I've ever had, hands down. They get the small things right, like an extra-large wine/beer/tap/spirit selection, consistently fresh and tasteful vegetables, quality soups/salads,etc. Also the kind of place where you can get decent portion sizes and good leftovers for the next day.
I get the vibe from their location near golf fields, private airport, country clubs, etc. that a good chunk of their business is local or fly-in businessmen, which seems to be the case when I go there and explains the private rooms. But they aren't snooty towards hicks like myself or my family either, and are really only exclusive in price. ~$120-$350 dollars for a full meal for 2, depending exactly on what you get.

>> No.16300217

>>16299620
Family and business gatherings would be the most common case for me. Maybe also if I'm traveling with someone else, but most of the people I know would just want something cheap and satisfying.
The problem with making a good steak for others is that I mainly do best at making it for my tastes, and my kitchen and cooking skills isn't really feasible to make more than two steaks at once if I'm doing anything different.
This is probably why grilling is so popular for large family gatherings, though again the expectation for quality is usually less unless your uncle is Guga Foods or something. Decent steak, burgers, etc., but probably nothing that will really rock your world.

I've eaten at one or two around NYC, but try to avoid them because I'm uncomfortable in the atmosphere and the food isn't worth the price. Much rather go to a good ethnic restaurant or a brew pub with tapas.

2 of us had the Core Classics menu, and 2 of us had the Core Seasonal menu. If I'm honest, nothing comes to mind when I think of it. I dont even remember which menu I had.

Normally I remember a lot about these experiences, the Foie Gras at Ramsays, the Tafferty Tart at Hestons, the cheese at Gavroche etc etc. Everywhere normally leaves me with some lasting impression. I can still recall all the dishes I had at Ramsays. But Core just didnt really have that kind of impact on me. I certainly enjoyed it at the time but there are other places I would visit before going there.

Not really
I went to a place called Vine's in Orlando and ate a seafood tower, foie gras, and lamb chops. A pour of The Macallan Rare Cask and a pour of Highland Park 25 year. Also went to a place called Texas de Brazil which I realize is a chain but you see a lot of expensive cars there. My friend brought me a $800 vintage bottle of Kristol from his liquor store for my birthday and bought me a pour of Louis XIII

both had a chill atmosphere and didn't feel too gaudy

I've been to:
Ad-Hoc, sort of a poor man's french laundry
Fiola
Fiola Mare
The Inn at Little Washington

Ad-Hoc was probably the worst of the four, but not awful. Elevated family-style american, good entrees, just okay everything else.

Fiola/Mare are probably the one two I will go back to, because they're reasonably priced. Had some incredible dishes including a tomato+cherry dessert and some crazy domed pasta bowl. Meat dish was probably the weakest just because it was very straightforward

Inn At Little Washington was delicious and well-crafted but is not worth 500 bucks. Anything over 200 is silly unless you're delving into wine pairings.

Yes. It can be hit or miss. I've had very good seafood and steaks. I like comfort foods and find that simple restaurants with dedicated chefs behind them are often much better. It is fun and I recommend you try different venues if you are able. But don't sell the little nooks short if you know how to follow the foodie trails out there. There's exceptional dining experiences at a low cost as well.

No. I’ve been to a restaurant that charged $50-70 per entree, so I would call that “pretty fancy.”

It was really good. All the food was literally perfectly prepared. The silverware and dishes were very nice - pretty sure the brandy snifters and cocktail glasses and water goblets were all Riedel, so pretty expensive crystal glasses. A nice environment too.

I enjoyed the experience

Been to about two dozen Michelin starred restaurants around the world, most in NYC. Most were great although I can see how it makes people uncomfortable. The only bad experience I ever had was at Uncle Boons, a Thai place. They couldn't even get the Thai tea right. Of the high end ones Eleven Madison Park and La Bernardin were my favorites. There's something truly unique and wonderful about the cuisine at some of these places although there's lots of places in NYC that I love that would be beneath a Michelin review.

Only interesting story is from when I took a girl to a nice steak place in Manhattan in 2005.
The card I initially used for payment was declined (turned out to be a problem on the processor’s end).
The waiter came to our table and said “Excuse me, sir, but we have a phonecall asking for you, and they say it’s urgent”.
He handed the girl a glass of wine and apologized for pulling me away.
When we were out of earshot he explain the card issue and I handed him a different one, which ran fine.
When we went back to the table, he told my date it was his mistake, the call was for someone with a similar name who had a reservation that night.

So my waiter suddenly became a bro-tier wingman when needed.
