As I promised in the last thread, I'll try getting back to reviewing

2011 Xi Bang Raw Puerh
6 grams, 160ml, 93 Celsius, 20s + 5. 5 total brews

This is a tea I got for free and drank before but kinda forgot about, the package was left exposed to air but not light, didn't smell bad or show signs of mold, so I threw it in the gaiwan.
The smell before brewing was a vaguely spicy smell, kinda like how old bay smells, with hints of coca-cola like smells. Somewhat pleasant.
The wash smelled kinda like sour grapes, maybe like a raisen cookie.
First brew became very mushoom-y, prompting me to check for mold, which I didn't find. Sadly, throughout all 5 infusions, it remained very much like mushroom broth, maybe with too much bay leaf thrown in. To be expected from a tea I left out, I suppose, but pretty disappointed. This may be the reason I forgot about it in the first place. I wish I had more to say but it's so incrdibly flat and one note I can't go into subtle nuances, and it didn't seem to really evolve.
I do think mushroom flavor is okay, but it's not the best, especially for a 10, almost 11, year old raw. I overall got to rate it as bad just for the age alone, but if this was a newer tea, it's probably middl of the pack, not bad but not great either.

Chinese people are superstitious af, but the practical reason is it keeps really well for long times, so back in the day when it took 2 months to go from Dali to North China it was the ideal tea for that.
Some people just like the funk, like the tibettans. Ripe is a meme, it's just a type of Hei Cha thats supposed to mimmic old af raw puerh. But even though it's a meme, sometimes it's really good.
I have mostly puerh just because I don't want to worry about losing flavor in a year, but even then, a third is fu brick and the rest is loose leaf.
I'll probably drink a black after I cleanse my pallet with some wine and ramen

You consider it overpriced? 30$ to 60$ for a 357g cake seems rather reasonable to me. Stuff like white2tea seems more expensive to me.

2020 Ba Da Mountain Ripe Puerh from Yunnan Sourcing
9 grams, 160ml, 93 celcius, 20s + 5s

I got this for a free sample during the fall season last year from Scott, ended up buying a cake because I think it's probably one of th few ripes I recieved from him thats actually good.
The smell is sweet, almost rminds me of mollasses or british jelly candies, very sugary smelling but heavier than just pure sugar.
The beginning is a very slight bitterness, not in any way overpowering, kinda giving to a dark chocolate kind of flavor. Clings heavily in the mouth, coats it and doesn't let go, finishes with a stronger bitterness but not a very unpleasant one. Very thick liquor, with an insanely rich, dark black color (my pictures don't do it justice, it's so black it reflects my ceiling). It's flavor can kind of be "muddy" that you expect of younger ripes, but it's light bitterness helps offset the muddiness.
I'd say as far as ripes go, it's probably a solid 7/10. I would recommend it to those starting out on puerh to get a feel for a "typical" young ripe that isn't overly complex or too one note. It offers a small layer of complexity that makes this tea a nice way to start trying to see past the "muddy" flavor of new ripes. I wouldn't recommend it to people who are in love with puerh as it lacks a lot of the traits of good puerh, but if you want a somewhat affordable no thinker sipper, it can make do.

>> No.16307619

Someone a moot point when everything in the tea world is limited run and changes year by year with almost no universal standards. Which is why generalist setups are usually the best "This set up makes it not mold." or "This setup makes it age (decay) more rapidly"

For me, the interpretation of pleasurable elements have mattered more than specific values or qualities such as age and minerality, though both are of importance. If the tea is likeable, I will be more engaged and relaxed, drink more, and thus get more effects. Tea drunkenness in the way many westerners (especially vendors) advertise is a complete larp, though.

Aged white tea from gu shu trees has given me the strongest tea high sensations. Many of them felt similar to sensations I’ve gotten from marijuana in the past (light pressure in temples, euphoric and floaty feelings, thoughts felt more tangible and thought-associations more spontaneous, etc). I’ve also had these effects from aged Taiwanese oolong

High quality gyokuro also seems to give me a unique tea high feeling. This is less similar to marijuana since there aren’t really any effects on my thought-associations, it’s mostly just an intense feeling of euphoria and well-being.

This is almost true. It's true if you live in Asia like climates, with high humidity. If you live in any place that's drier, your tea Will lose flavor quickly. The word pumidor is a joke on the word humidor which is used to store cigars, which suffer from the very same issue, they dry out. However store doesn't need to be complicated. A plastic box or cardboard box with maybe a couple of evenly spaced saucers filled with a bit of water are enough for most casual drinkers. Okay, this tea is something else. It's the 2017 XiaGuan "Gao Shan Yun Wu Lao Shu Hong" from KTM.

https://kingteamall.com/products/2017-xiaguan-gao-shan-yun-wu-lao-shu-hong-high-mountain-cloud-old-tree-black-tea-cake-200g-hong-cha-dian-hong

First, let's make it clear that this tea is like 8 cents/gram. It's about as cheap as you can find. The dry leaf smells, in actuality, like milk chocolate. Not hints of chocolate or the suggestion of chocolate - if you stick your nose right into the cake and inhale deeply, it's like putting your face into a box of chocolates. Speaking of boxes of chocolate, there's also a little bit of cherry coming through for me in the dry leaf, which was reminding me a lot of the variety of chocolates you'd get in a box where there's that pink cherry filling.

Moving on to the warm leaves, those scents only intensify, and when you finally wet them, cinnamon very overtly enters the mix. The first few steeps are basically perfect mirrors of the scents so far, again harkening back to that cherry filled chocolate. Here's where it gets interesting, though. After four or five steeps, that really round and luxurious chocolate taste starts to fade and is replaced by a different, though similarly categorized one - really high quality burley pipe tobacco. It was extremely odd to taste that coming through when it's such a specific smell that I've smelled so many times in a completely different context. I don't think I've ever had a tea taste like I just put my nose into a tin of Burley Flake.

Anyway, I'd recommend this as a very deep, round, sweet, and actually pretty complex tea that won't even approach breaking the bank. If anyone orders from KTM anytime soon I think you would do well to throw on a cake.

Cast iron tea kettles are really cool, look for ones from iwachu it's a Japanese iron industry that makes really nice ones, there are a few websites dedicated to selling them and you can find some great deals on eBay occasionally, especially if you are willing to clean up a lightly rusty one.
This site sells a lot of Japanese cast iron

I would say that when it comes to health, tea is tea. I don't think there is a radical difference in healthiness between them.

I'd suggest (preferably) organic loose leaf tea which you can order online. just search 'loose leaf tea for sale' into duck duck go.

also, importantly, clear spring water (can be bottled). You don't want tap, water that has a lot of minerals (called hard water), or distilled. you can use these but it makes a noticeable difference on the taste

and temperature makes a difference so buy a thermometer. and a cheap scale to weigh it too.

Tea bags generally start from lower quality leaf, are processed in a way to mask off flavors rather than accentuate good ones, and don't steep well since they're in a tiny bag. I think a decent comparison would be Kraft singles vs actual cheese. The former isn't bad necessarily and the latter isn't guaranteed to be great, but the upper limit and the range of possibility with actual cheese are far greater.
