Basically, the only additives to cigarettes were clove and licorice power (to reduce harshness) and a few other things that would be considered “natural”. I dont really know if cigarettes were ever meant to be inhaled, but a large cigarette company (I believe it was Lucky Strike but I’m not sure) ran an ad campaign called “Do you inhale?” in the 20’s and 30’s that asked their customers whether they inhaled or not, so it’s clear that a significant portion of cigarette smokers didn’t inhale back then and treated them as mini cigars. I could go into a spiel on how filters and ultra-lights actually made cigarettes MORE dangerous but it’s not the time for that

so realistically in todays world, we have no choices if we want "mini cigar" cigarettes, with "natural"/pure ingredients, and just don't inhale?
Or is this what people do when they roll their own cigarettes, just throw some pipe tobacco in or something and just roll it up without a filter or anything?

personally I love cigars and pipes, but there's an interest in cigarettes to me as well. I'd NEVER go within 10 yards of modern cigarettes though, absolutely fucking disgusting and only be interested if they were literally mini cigars. I feel I'd have to roll my own, not sure though. Asking.

also if you could find that campaign that'd be cool.

I was more curious about cigarettes.
I guess RYO Cigarettes is the term I was looking for, I also just noticed someone mentioned craft cigarettes >>16124635, maybe they mean the same thing I was asking?

sorry i'm not great with terms still new to all this.
the only difference I can see between a cigar and a RYO cigarette is if the tobacco is different (has additives) than what is in cigars, and if the paper is safe. Besides that it's just a "pure" cigarette.

Then it's just down to inhaling or not,
I don't see much information for "not inhaling cigarettes" when searching, I just get the typical "you don't inhale cigars".
so I'm especially interested in seeing some stuff about that, because I'd never inhale even RYO cigarettes.

in what way would a cigarillo be any different than a RYO cigarette?
you'd put in loose tobacco into both, the only difference is cigarillo uses tobacco leaf and cigarette is paper (given you don't use a filter).
Besides that, you can choose not to inhale either.
Maybe a possible size difference.

I guess maybe you're latchijg on to "mini cigars" and sure that's understandable, cigarillos have the leaf paper. But my real question is targeted at RYO cigarettes.
Also the question about inhaling vs not.

You did good. I think inhaling is the most addicting things of cigarette.
I tried cigars and pipes, and despite the nicotine content in them is way more than a single cigarette, to fell "satiated" I always lightned a cigarette after finishing a cigar.

a RYO is a cigarette, while a cigarillos is not.
RYO contains paper and a filter, cigarillos not

> you'd put in loose tobacco into both
Good cigarillos have a (part of)tabacco leaf instead of a paper.
Inhaling a cigarillos is harsher than a cigarette. You can choose to inhale a pipe, I don't know where you want to go with this argument.

>> No.16128048

>>16127977
>You did good. I think inhaling is the most addicting things of cigarette.
Yeah, additionally the additives imo
also I notice as I said, everybody talks about cigarettes as id you have to inhale. Even studies I've seen (briefly) consistently seem to mention inhaling, but never seem to focus on not inhaling.
I am genuinely confused why it seems people don't ever suggest not inhaling, of course not smoking at all will be better, but if you don't inhale, and you are smoking an RYO cig, I fail to see the difference from a cigar still.

I will try searching that.
Also that ad doesn't seem to be promoting inhaling, it seems to be saying some people think they don't inhale, but accidentally do or take in smoke, so they are saying Lucky's smoke is "pure" so if you do accidentally take in smoke it's less harmful.
>>16128001
>RYO contains paper and a filter, cigarillos not
Yeah, I mentioned that, but I also think the filter is optional? It just ends up being a paper wrapped cigarillo.

>Inhaling a cigarillos is harsher than a cigarette. You can choose to inhale a pipe, I don't know where you want to go with this argument.
Not an argument, just trying to understand.
Obviously inhaling a cigar, a pipe, a cigarillos, and a cigarette is all worse than not inhaling them. What I'm confused upon is why I rarely see anything about simply not inhaling cigarettes. Everywhere I look, people seem to make it a point that you can only inhale cigarettes. This isn't an issue you see when searching pipes or cigars.

>> No.16128059

Also my question regarding additives in tobacco used for RYO cigarettes. Are there generally aditives or is it pretty much like pipe tobacco?

>> No.16128079

I’m not going to bother looking for all your posts to reply to, but the additives aren’t the only dangerous thing about tobacco. Even pure tobacco with zero additives is still harmful because over 4,000 different compounds (a majority harmful) are produced from the combustion of tobacco alone. Smoking any burning plant matter is bad for your health, including marijuana

Pipe also seems like a nice middleground. I enjoy smoking occasionally so I suppose I should look into storing tobacco properly to preserve freshness.

Kellner cigars have a taste that no other blender can achieve, and an aftertaste that I love. Avo, Davidoff, Griffin, all of them are Kellner blends and all have that taste and aftertaste to some degree or another. There are a few other cigars that ring my bells, but none quite like Kellner does. As for why Davidoff vs the others, their classic lineup have the vitolas I prefer as well as outstanding balance and construction, and have the strongest Kellner flavor. I have what I consider to be a very good sense of smell and taste, yet I never seem to get much out of pipes and cigars. Before smoking, I get a lot of enjoyment out of the scenes of the various types of tobacco in a given blend or cigar, but on smoking that hasn't translated well into the various "flavorful" experiences others describe. Lighter blends tend to be a bit grassy or hay-like, and heavier blends tend to be more like a cup of coffee or semi-bitter chocolate.

I work to keep from having it burn too hot or too fast, to keep from having that alter the tastes, but I also think I've smoked enough times that I'd be able to pick out more of the notes and tastes that others claim to be able to.

It's pretty subtle and can take a lot of time and patience to really get the various notes and flavors. You might try just picking a single blend, and smoke only that, over and over, until you're out. And of course keep it cool, really on the verge of going out for maximum flavor, and don't do anything else, don't read a book or whatever. Just smoke.
Also, you don't always have a great smoke, no matter how long you've been at it, but you just go with all the okay smokes for those times when you have an amazing smoke, because it's still good and relaxing anyway.

I do try to keep things cool and slow, to not scorch things too much and throw off the flavors, and also tend to keep aromatics and non-aromatics to their own pipes. I can see a potential issue being that I take long breaks between smoking, and tend to mix up my rotation from one time to the next, so I'm lacking consistent exposure to any given profile.
>>16141511
For pipes, I've tried a variety of things to see which options I'm partial to: various aromatics, an English blend, a VaPer, a few types of Virginia flake, as well as some drug store beginner staples when I was first getting into it.

As far as cigars go, I'm newer to them, so I expect to take a while to pick up on different profiles, while I learn the ropes.

Its extracted from the opium poppy (papaver somniferum) by scoring the bulb and collecting the latex. Theres probably other processing involved but smoking opium tends to be all natural. Further processing will yield heroin, morphine and other precursors to other pharmaceuticals such as oxicotin and oxicodone. Some states in the US it's actually legal to grow said papaver somniferum so as long as authorities dont find the bulbs scored which can lead to legal trouble. But as the old saying goes... It was a pretty good smoke altogether, lasted me an hour and thrity minutes, so price wise probably the most value per money of a cigar I've had. It did get a very tight draw towards the end, and I had to use a poker but on the other hand, that tight draw is probably why it lasted as long as it did. Almost tasted a bit like licorice towards the end, a sort of smokey sweetness.

I'll have to try and remember to give more Italian cigars a try. I've got quite a few cigars stockpiled at the moment so I won't be making any more purchases for now.

Turkish cigarette tobacco is basically poor quality English blend pipe tobacco where it's oriental bulked up with virginia or such. If you like that flavour profile, you'll probably love most English blends.

add some red or bright virginia in with the turkish. if you're using bright virginia then start with a 1:1 ratio, if you're using red then start with 1:3 ratio. adjust from there. or just buy a pre-made oriental or balkan pipe blend. a balkan pipe blend will have some latakia (fire cured turkish) in it which adds additional richness and flavor.

I don't know what the process are outside Italy, but here they're pretty cheap indeed and they also don't need humidor

They are for more "casual" smoking than for contemplation respect to cubans or nicaraguan, in fact you usually smoke them halved (ammezzati) o thirded (Golden cut)

You can also smoke them as a whole, it's called "alla maremmana" (the maremmana way) because is how the cowboys from Tuscany used to smoked then in the are area called Maremma

The tobacco duty is quite high here, but I buy from another country where they cost me about six euros a pack. And that's all true, though I think I'm going to stick to smoking the whole cigar as I typically don't smoke unless I know I have a lot of time. I also am keeping them in a humidor of sorts, as some people say they do benefit from it, although I really just stuck them in a jar with a small boveda pack. If it works for pipe tobacco without one, it'll work for these.

the italian cigars are made from fire cured burley, not cigar leaf. they have a very different flavor; if you keep them with regular cigars the flavors will cross-contaminate. McConnell and Rattray. There's very little they make that isn't at least very good, most of their stuff is really excellent. they don't have a zillion blends but the quality level is very high. Mac Baren, Cornell & Diehl, and Pease tend to come out with a new blend every week that gets hyped up on the webs as the Next Great Thing and forgotten within a month. Peter Stokkebye also does good stuff but a lot of their blends are aromatics and like most aromatics are made more for a nice smell than a good taste. McConnell did come out with a bunch of "heritage" blends recently but those were old Dunhill recipes from the 60's and 70's when they made the Dunhill blends under contract. Once Dunhill left the business (sold off their pipe and tobacco lines, got out of cigars entirely) then McConnell was free to haul the recipes out of hiding.

I'm not really sure. I think some of it is still the after effects of McClellands leaving the business so everyone rushed to find other good brands and stock up, then the threat of the deeming regulations, maybe some brexit shit in there, and now covid crap, and I guess a sort of positive feedback loop of people stocking up huge quantities so everything sells out fast which causes people to bulk buy even more when they get the chance and so on...

All I know is 90% of the shit I want to buy has been consistently out of stock for at least the past 5 years and it's really pissing me off. Sooner or later I'm going to just start buying whole leaf and hopefully also growing my own and just say fuck this retarded market.

in the holiday season some manufacturers will do a Christmas special of a small humidor filled with a sampler of their cigars for only slightly more than the price of the cigars. I got my first humidor that way, this lovely Cuesta Rey box came with 30 of their Pyramides (10 Centenario, 10 Centro Fina, and 10 #9 iirc). It holds 30-40 sticks depending on rg - i prefer coronas and lonsdales so it holds about 40 of mine. I have other humidors to stash stuff I bought by the box, but this is still my primary humidor.

And I still have a fondness for Cuesta-Rey Centenario Piramides.

probably best to find alternatives. you'll never really find a direct substitute for your favorites, but you can find things that scratch that itch. I went through this with Dunhill Ready Rubbed when it disappeared in the early 90's, went through it again with Balkan Sobranie and Bengal Slices when they left the market in the 90's, went through it again with Dunhill Durbar which only gets a production run every decade or so. you learn to stock up what you like when you can. Penzance and Peretti Royal and Tashkent scratched my Sobranie itch, McConnell Latakia Flake scratched my Bengal Slices itch, McConnell original oriental (and now also their oriental square) scratch my Durbar itch. bought several pounds of Dunhill Ready-Rubbed when it was re-introduced. I never really liked the McClelland virginias but I've got probably 30 lbs of the Rattray's and McConnell virginias in the closet, some of it dating back to the early 90's, just in case K&K does something stupid (also leaf quality isn't getting any better).
