I don’t know what Americans pay for wine but I won’t go much higher than $35CAD unless it’s something really special. Even then $60 is pretty well my limit. The bottles I usually buy are $15-22. And the South African $8, but that’s only for cooking. It’s too sweet to drink.
There’s always this talk that wine is a meme, and that’s sort of true, but it’s also really uninformed. Good wine wants to go with good food and enjoying the two together makes them both better.

There are plenty in that range that taste as good as most in the $20-40 range if you know where to go

My go to is a boxed wine called Nighthawk black- bourbon barrel aged Cabernet Sauvignon. $16 for a 3.5 bottle sized box

Wine from new zealand can be an incredible deal. Their pinot noir is crazy good for cheap.

NZ is the only white I drink regularly. There’s something about that Marlborough terroire that gives a mineral element without losing the fruit and succulence.
Some of our local stuff is good too but I’ll drink red before white so I don’t know the varieties as well.

In MurriKKKa, the sweet spot for Cali wines is around 10 bucks. There are hundreds of good bottles around that price. Try a couple, note which ones you like, then ask the oldest person at the wine store for similar bottles.

If you make good wine, that will be it... but if you don't, my $12-15's always on cheap chianti. A bottle of that, some liver, some fava beans - you can eat like a champ, feed a friend, and mess with your MAOI's for like $20.

There’s no easy answer. A lot depends on your palette.

Northwest US, French, and Idalian are my favorite. Californian and South American wines are dogshit.

Tempranillo, cabs, pinots, and merlots are my go tos. Basically find a region and varietal you like and then go from there.

I buy wine that's 10-20$ AUD, The more expensive stuff is for drinking and the cheaper is for cooking, sometimes I will finish a more expensive bottle in my cooking but I usually keep cheap stuff on hand for that.

Anything over 30$ is for special nights or if you really like a certain vintage grab half a dozen at 30$ enjoy it, before it goes up in a few years to stupid prices, I have some stuff that's 100$ a bottle now but it's for drinking because idc about wine reselling, I got lucky and picked up 6 at 18$ each!
