Bar food is pretty common up here for most restaurants along with cheese curds and pretzels. Stuff like wild rice and hot dishes are also common at potlucks and whatnot. We also have a pretty big Vietnamese population so there are a ton of decent options.

A lot of anons talking about meme dishes and fast food but are missing a key upper Midwest feature - supper clubs. They’re few and far between now that boomers are dying off and small rural communities are disappearing, but there is really good charm to them; great food at good prices.
Prime ribs, chicken kievs, Friday fish fries, and a minty grasshopper drink for dessert. Used to go to one for my grandfather’s birthday every year but sadly I think the place shuttered due to the recession from covid.

Went to Milly-Walk-Kayo forever ago but still think about the chili I had in some Ben's Chili Bowl equivalent, so diner since the thirties or forties based on fixtures, downtown, & was just chili mac but with weird regional toppings that I do not recall but still remember as being extra delicious. Also ate at the weird converted speakeasy restuarant downtown where you exit through the underground staircase that leads up to a phone booth.

Chicago had great food but I wasn't there long enough to get the true homecooking ideas & cuisine. Lotta Polish influence, great Taqueria...

They’re all pretty unique from one another depending on whatever sub-region they’re, local economies, and the types of customers that visit. They all have varying degrees of formality - more urban ones you’ll find people dressing up and have live bands playing while rural ones you’ll get farmers fresh off the fields in their overalls eating with their families.
They typically run very late as well since they function as social clubs. Go in, grab a bite to eat, then sit at the bar to talk and drink with neighbors until you’re booted out at 1 AM.
The buildings tend to be pretty neat as they often started as someone’s house or a tiny gas station and gradually expanded.
Not from Chicago so can’t speak about their food scene but go out of your way to visit a supper club in some little farming town if you ever have the chance. They’re pretty soulful in a region not known for culinary excellence.

No.
Supper club is a dinner-only restaurant, often only 3 or 4 nights a week.
Usually no membership required these days.

From the outside, you're not going to find anything particularly daring at a supper club; nothing avant garde. Lots of well made classic dishes, a bit nicer than everyday food, less expensive than a "fancy" restaurant but they usually have tablecloths.
Expect the soup to be good, and try to get there on fish fry night.

Lions/Masons/Elks/Moose/Eagles do have a membership requirement; you kinda gotta commit.

Lived in Wisconsin all my life. A lot of wypipo food has German or Scandinavian roots. We also have shit like fish fries, pig roasts, supper clubs, etc. If you live on the eastern half of the state you will get a shit ton of fish from Lake Michigan and Green Bay. Lake Winnebago has a metric fuck ton of sturgeon, but it also has bad algae problems. In hunting seasons you will see a lot of venison.

The town I grew up in had a big Hispanic community so there were a lot of authentic Mexican restaurants. If you want places with a lot of good restaurants you'll have to go to Milwaukee or Madison (Janesville has some nice spots) in the southern part of the state. If you're in the Fox Valley you'll want to go to Appleton or Green Bay. If you're further north, like in Rhinelander or Eagle River, you're pretty much fucked.

Despite some places in Wisconsin either empty or white trash as fuck I would rather live here than an urban shithole full of loudmouth faggots on the coast.

I ate steaks and burgers almost everyday while living in ND fracking. It was actually some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life, and it was a paradise for an alcoholic too, really liked the Germanic heritage for the towns as well, obviously the white towns, not the Indian ones. Bullshit.
All the up nort towns I've been to have a comfy as fuck diner, bar (with food), supper club, or restaurant. Maybe not table cloths & wine lists fancy, but the food is good (but admittedly not diverse).

Besides, if you're that far north, you're on (or next to) a tribal casino, and they'll have a passable restaurant.
