imagine having to reserve a table to eat at a restaurant. if i have to reserve chances are it is either over-rated fancy pants bullshit, or a tourist trap. if not one of the former, chances are they're slammed for a holiday or special event or something and you are going to receive poor service anyway.

What's the problem? Even if it takes them 1 hour to cook your food, does it really take you more than 30 minutes to eat?

some of the best dinners I had lasted 4+ hours just drinking wine and eating desserts after the main meal

I've never been to a "reservation" kind of restaurant. Could you explain what's the issue there?

What happens at 8:30? Do they actually kick you out?

also this, reservations are for fancy places and fancy places suck. Exceptions are if you have a large group, or if it's Valentine's Day or something

Generally when you go out to a nice place, you're with friends and maybe you chat over drinks for 20-30min or so, order some starters for the table, then order entrees, then desert and coffee. Maybe with family I eat in about an hour and a half, but with friends generally longer.

I've only been in this situation a few times. It's more common in London than here, and generally they just stop serving you and give you the hint. Sometimes they're more direct.

I wouldn't say that's true. I've been to lots of places that take reservations that were fantastic.

>>15993239
Agreed. I understand not all places can afford to accommodate that, but, I guess if they can't it isn't a good spot for me. They're making more on the wine and drinks than the food anyways. I would say 4 hours is rare for me, but 2 to 2.5 is typical. Hour and a half might as well cook at home, literally defeats the purpose of eating out.

Go to a bar or a pub, restaurants are for eating in, they're not a clubhouse.

Generally pub food isn't as good, but, yeah with a lot of these trendy places I'd rather just eat at home. I'm not paying 100+ a head just in food to be told I need to scarf it down and order quickly.

In Europe, especially southern Europe it's normal to have very long dinners if going out with friends
