What significant advantage does cast-iron have over nonstick pans? Cause personally i find it hellish to cook on cast iron, everything sticks and its a bitch to clean

>> No.15941606

Sounds like your pan isn't seasoned well enough.

>> No.15941610

>>15941606
dont get me started on the seasoning crap, really watch the fucking point? A nonstick pan can cook everything the same without all the hussle

>> No.15941617

>Make sure pan is always preheated
>Clean with hot water and use a wooden spoon to scrape anything off it
>If it needs more than that heat the pan up and use boiling water
>Dry then return to the heat to make sure it dries properly
>Wipe out with oil
My cast iron is older than me and it's never been in better shape.

When your seasoning is thick enough it behaves like a nonstick pan which doesn't wear down over time like teflon. Also they are good at cooking things evenly.

>> No.15941646

>>15941639
no you still gotta add oil first

>> No.15941659

>>15941646
yeah also this, without oil its just a burned sticky mess, nonstick is more healthy on that matter

>> No.15941677

It handles high temperatures much better. You can chuck it in the oven at 300C and it won't make any difference. And it doesn't get ruined if you stick a fork in it. And unlike teflon, you won't have to replace it every 5-7 years.
Complaining about seasoning is seriously embarrassing. It is very easy and is not time consuming in any other way than that you have to let it sit. Just put it in the oven and do other stuff while it sits there.

teflon a gay

>> No.15941691

/ck/ elitism makes it seem like you have to baby cast iron every step of the way, but I like cast iron because its such an easy work horse. Don't have to worry about ruining a Teflon coating, it has great heat retention if your burner is too small or wonky or something, impossible to break, lasts forever... don't use soap or a dishwasher and you're fine. Anythung else is autism.

>> No.15941697

if you start cooking some fried eggs then mid cooking you decide to make an omelette instead and mix what's in the pan it all ends up sticking to the bottom

I want a huge 15 inch cast-iron pan but the cleaning process for these is fucking gay. I mean just read this shit.. I just wanna cook my food and clean up before the food gets cold. Not go through a fucking process to clean 1 fucking pan

> it doesn't get ruined if you stick a fork in it

well no sht its already has a sticky surface there's nothing to ruin.

Regarding the seasoning,i hear you on being easy to do so,but when it comes to cooking i want to use at little oil as possible.

i'd rather buy a good pan every ~7 years that gets the job greatly for about 90ish% of its life span than being hands on, on every fucking meal i cook, but that's just me

>> No.15941710

cast iron is a meme, carbon steel does everything but better

>> No.15941729

It can cook on higher heat and has better heat retention. The best thing to get though is enameled cast iron so you get all the benefits of CI without the hassle of caring for it.

you're either not seasoning in properly or your pan isn't hot enough before cooking

this. except I use soap and its fine.

Anyone who says soap is bad for cast iron is a moron, this made sense years ago when dish soap was made with lye but that hasnt been done in decades. Soap is 100% safe.

>> No.15941763

can we please put this meme to bed
unless you're regularly frying things in the pan on cooking meat (which gets its fats all over it) it just isn't going to be nonstick
ideal use is to sear meat and fry things only

>> No.15941769

YOU are a moron. any kind of soap will dislodge and consequently remove oil, i e the very oil that seasons the pan

just use soap anyway and then reseason it because you're not going to strip away all of the layers of seasoning

Clean your pan after you use it while it's still hot. Once the seasoning builds up it's easier to clean. It takes 30 seconds clean then a minute to heat and oil.

You have to replace a teflon pan every five years, all for the convenience of not learning basic cooking skills.

They will have a greater thermal mass than pretty much any teflon pan. Good for maintaining a constant temperature. While thinner steel or copper pans have higher thermal conductivity, it's a bit of a fools errand trying to regulate high heat unless you are going with a wok or something.

A nonstick pan can do nonstick better than cast iron (at first), but cast iron will always last longer and heat more solidly and evenly than nonstick. And of course, if you actually season your pain often, it'll quickly turn nonstick enough to rival a nonstick pan.
