If Ratty had been a mouse she would have made a great girlfriend for Greybeard. She is very cute. I wish i could have rats but my mousema was such a super intelligent giga homie I dont think I could handle a creature more advanced in intelligence and homiedom dying on me. But we will see..

I have never had a mouse and I want more rats, however Ratty Girl began to develop recurring mammary tumors after a year and I can’t afford to do that again. I did buy her from petsmart so she had shitty genes, but I’m still scared of getting another rodent since it’s very common for the ladies. Greybeard looks very cute and small and I’m worryingly inclined right now to sanitize the old cage and go buy two mice.

Yeah try to get from a reputable breeder. Though its Russian roulette regardless.

If you get multiple mice they have to be females and I recommend at least 3 so if one dies the other isn't so lonely. They aren't as sociable as male mice with human though. You can't keep multiple male mice because male mice are murder demons and they will murder anyone who isnt a cute girl. Alternatively you can get a male mouse and several african soft furred rat females and they should get along okay(they aren't rats).

We aren't sure what caused greybeards health decline, I took him to multiple vets and they couldnt tell us anything. He lost a lot of fur and half his weight before we decided to put him down. We theorize it was genetic but we don't know.

Yeah, I know male rodents are monsters which is why the mammary tumors thing kills me because it’s mainly the girls and they’re the only ones I feel comfortable having a few of. I’ve never heard of the African soft furred rats so that’s a cool idea, I’ll have to do some research.
Was Greybeard old? That’s a shitty experience, Ratty had the tumors removed a few times and she always bounced back and died one night being quite old. It would make me very sad to see mine sick over a period of time :/

I would say Greybeard was on the older side. I had him for almost 20 months and he was oldish when I got him (full grown and the worker at the store said he had been there for a while, I never asked how long though)

Sometimes rodents will only live a year or even just shy of a year and sometimes you get a freak rat that lives to be 4. But usually its around 1-2 years. He started deteriorating about a month before we had him put down. It was kind of slow, but once he dropped from a healthy 40+grams to 25 and no longer eating or drinking I couldn't watch him suffer. He actually looked relaxed when he was euthanized. It was nice to say goodbye and he is resting in a very nice serene place in a cairn where I can continue to serve him by brining him rocks and goodies for him.

Regardless a rodent is a pretty unique experience unlike any cat or dog I ever had. They really are creepily intelligent and sociable for such a short lived creature.
Ratty is so cute, I really do want a mischief of rats someday but I would really need a good cage and free range area. Knowing me I'd probably be a psycho and give them a rat proofed room or something. Rats seem really, REALLY cool. You should check out ShadowTheRats youtube. She has great advice and her rats are soooooo cute!

Thanks for the pics of ur rat~ shes perfect~<3

Wow, you scarily remind me of myself! I agree, owning a rodent is way different than any other animal and I grew up with a vet as a dad so I’ve had most types of animals. The closest I can compare them to is a horse, very intelligent emotionally/socially and very cheeky. Their size also allows you to have them almost anywhere and I was always with her so I think that may be part of the experience too. I miss having her - she would love to dash across the bed, stop by me for a scratch on the head, then do it over again until tired. A rat room and possibly breeding them is my dream as much as that concerns my partner :)
I also have my Ratty’s ashes, I’ve lost so many pets over the years but I was saddest with her. I’m happy you at least got a nice moment with him at the end, you sound like a very caring owner. I hope you get all the rat/mice you want one day, they’d be very lucky. I haven’t had a rat for a bit now but Greybeard reminds me just how much I loved it. Thank you for the YouTube rec and good luck with your rodent adventures, I had a great time hearing about Greybeard

I love his hat! He looks like he had quite the little home too.
One time my grandmother brought over her golden retriever who was particularly adept at opening doors and got into the room where her cage was. Guess he got too close to her nose because he ended up with a nasty gash on his own. I think she would have been more receptive to you though.

I’ve actually seen a capybara running around wild once, which must have been someone’s former pet, and I’d be afraid of what one with rat-level intelligence would do. They might be benevolent to us as their former owner-servants? Everyone I know has a terrible bias against rats and I’ve gotten a lot of surprised, confused, and even worried reactions when talking about my Ratty.
I forgot how big she was
