There are, but the quality doesn't increase proportionally to the price. Diminishing returns start hitting pretty hard after the OGD114 price point and REALLY hard after the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked price point.

>> No.15806111

Part of why there's more expensive Scotches than expensive bourbons is because bourbon is aged in new, charred oak, whereas Scotches are typically not aged in new oak.
New oak has a SHITLOAD of flavor to give off and as such it's really fucking easy to overage a bourbon. Most bourbons don't taste very good when aged much beyond 9 years; there are exceptions.

what passes as above average can be attained for a moderate price in the US market(mainly if your spirits arent state controlled), but what is now average is not good bourbon. its so mass produced that the middle ground becomes the vast majority of the market. not to mention they cut as many corners as possible and still have the audacity to cheat the customer with bullshit stories and marketing as well as over charging on top of the distribution and stores side getting their cut. typical corporate greed.

really good bourbon is generally not available to the commercial market because the richfag owners reserve it for their richfag associates or some hacks at a ranked tasting. normies get to enjoy somewhat palatable swill at a premium.

also the general characteristics of bourbon is on the short side of simple, whereas scotch has a multitude of tiers and categories in its profile.

I posted last week and got some recommendations, thanks again for those lads. A couple of questions:

1. I got Nikka from the barrel and really like the smokiness in it. Is that smoke the same type of flavour that’s in peated whiskies, or is it something different?

2. I tried Bufallo Trace as my first bourbon. It’s fine, but I didn’t like it as much as the Scotches I have tasted. Trying to figure out if its bourbon or just this type that I’m not a fan of. It kind of tasted a bit thin, like a lower concentrated version of whiskey. Is that normal for bourbon vs. Scotch?

Angel's Envy had a port finish that came in a fancy red wood box about 8-10 years ago that was hands down the BEST whiskey I've ever had. It will never be back and this haunts me every day.

Knob Creek single barrel is fantastic, always consistent high quality, and better than almost anything else I've ever had over 50 dollars. Fuck Woodford Reserve.

Four Roses Small Batch is better than Single Barrel.

If you can find it or have it shipped, Peach Street Bourbon is an excellent whiskey.

Also, 291 bourbon and rye are fantastic.

Vodka is distilled on on column stills to 90% and then filtered several times to get a neutral spirit. This here is distilled to a lower proof with lots of the congeners left in the distillate (on pot stills, even though that doesn't matter as much as some people think because you can get fat distillates out of a column still, too if you go lower with the proof).

It's not magical, you'll need to compare notes to have them actually stand out. If you've had cherries before, you aren't guaranteed to taste cherry notes in wine either.
For scotch you can probably get tasters of famous single malt scotches - some normal, some in sherry barrels, some with some other flavorings.
For scotch, there are the Speysides and Highlands which are closer to irish and japanese (imo) then lowlands and islay which are smokey. Even in dirt cheap single malt scotches you can tell the difference between a speyside and a lowland - try it yourself with Sheldaig. They make several varieties.

For bourbon and other whiskey, maybe compare Jim Beam's oaked ($20, found in 750ml) with the normal one or with evan williams or jack daniels. You'll be able to tell the difference oak makes. I think oak also heavily reduces alcohol sharpness/bite that many bourbon drinkers like anyway.

>> No.15828671

I enjoy cheap scotch but it's so tempting to go up a notch. Bourbon seems to change styles entirely when you do that so people often stick with the tried and true.

Buffalo Trace is actually way sweeter and more nuanced than 99% of bourbons I've had. Comparing it to scotches, I would say it's got a very similar flavor profile and overall finish to Glenmorangie 10 year. I even pick up some sherry-like notes from the Trace.

A lot of scotch drinkers generally think scotch=malty and/or smoky, and never sweet. There are smoky scotches that will taste unpeated, but all peated scotches will taste fairly smoky. It all depends on the char, and whether or not peat was used for the char. Naturally, barrels with a deep char will taste smokier. Bourbon-barreled scotch also tends to be fairly smoky without any hint of peat, for example. Hope that answers your question.

Tequila tonight. This stuff is nice enough, but not worth what they're asking. Aside from a bit of citrus there isn't much to remind you you're drinking an agave spirits. It's not being overpowered by oak or anything, the whole thing altogether is too subtle/delicate. A bit disappointing because a lot of reviews and people like liquorhound rated it highly.
Any other whisk(e)y drinkers like tequila? I've been getting more into it lately and at this point I can safely say I enjoy it as much as bourbon or scotch.

I've never seen one of these scotch grids that wasn't shit because they have to have two opposing flavors in each axis, but that's not how whisky flavors work.
