No doubt, but all I'm saying is that meatball subs are not really a regional thing around here, and you'd honestly find more italians eating a cheesesteak, or even a cold cut sub.

The signature dish of Rochester NY is the garbage plate.

There are some real retard ones here like breakfast buffet, fish fry, biscuits and gravy, fried chicken (I get the KFC connection, but come on), seafood boil. Those are too generic and often aren't even that famous there. Others aren't even in the right place like Alabama getting pecan pie when it's much more associated with GA. Also born and raised in VA and no one eats peanuts and coke. Hell boiled peanuts are probably more associated with the Carolinas than us. Country ham might be our thing. Princes, the apparent originating Mecca of ‘hot chicken’ is fucking disgusting. Tourists go there because “original” and it would be racist to give them a bad review.
Nobody who lives in Nashville (outside of “””affordable urban housing”””) will answer ‘Prince’s’ if you ask where to find good chicken.

Absolutely not. Maybe chimichangas, but they're both touristy gimmick type dishes that some people might eat from time-to-time and no one here eats regularly. Chimichangas are certainly on more restaurant menus than sonoran dogs. There's lots of subtle regional variations in how food prepared here, but nothing really stands out as a signature dish for the state as a whole. We have cowboy food with and without much Mexican influence, of course plenty of Mexican influence foods, some local tribal food influences (but it's rare to see outside of home cooking or general produce). We eat a lot of squash and bean dishes in my house, and swear by several pepper products from the state, for instance.

Came here to post this. Chorizo, while tasty, is in none of my recipes (in fact I swapped chorizo out for bacon in my breakfast burritos) nor do I see it at restaurants or particularly hyped up at grocery stores. Brisket is indeed king because people out here pride themselves on their smoking/grilling prowess and brisket is the final boss. I know nobody who makes chili. Chili would be fine to stay but the chorizo hash needs to be swapped out for something that is legitimate TexMex, not some Californian’s idea of it.

It's my favorite meal, but I wasn't expecting it to be assigned as our signature dish.

IIRC, there's a reputable claim that cheese dip was invented here. Obviously fondue was likely invented somewhere else first, but adding peppers and cumin might have originated with an Arkansan. Almost every restaurant has it on their menu regardless of the kind of cuisine they specialize in. There are/were cheese dip competitions held annually. At certain times of the year, grocery stores will build a tower out of Velveeta and Rotel. I used to like it, but can rarely stomach it these days.

Personally, I would argue that our signature dish is either fried catfish or chopped beef/pork plates. It's common for churches and schools to fry catfish as a fundraiser. We also have a lot of hot tamale vendors in the southeast (delta) portion of the state.

There's this old black dude who won a James Beard award for his pulled pork. He put the award in a picture frame too small to hold it, and hung it haphazardly on the wall. It's hung crooked on a wall surrounded by other photos and things. Dude just does not give even the slightest of fucks. Pretty based.

I grew up eating boiled peanuts in Fort Lauderdale, on the black/Hispanic/poor white side of the city. Spicy or bust.

In 1920 maybe. I'd give it to a pork roll/taylor ham, egg & cheese bagel sandwich.

New York strip was first called Kansas City Strip by Chicago meat packers, so it being in New York is kinda stupid.

Fry bread has more association with Navajo Indians than the Lakota tripes of the Dakotas, so it should probably go to New Mexico or Arizona.

Burnt ends is Kansas City style BBQ, which is in Missouri and not Kansas.

Oregon is spot on with Marionberry pie. NC is wrong though, other places do hush puppies better. I'd put either vinegar bbq or banana pudding instead.

Arkansas has those weird corn-wrapped tamales. They're gross, but I think it's a local thing. Had them in Fayetteville after a Piggies game.

Yes but at least the food is fixed. Pork roll really is the right answer for NJ, saltwater taffy is unsurprisingly only found on the coast and it's purely a novelty. Whereas pork roll egg and cheese is a breakfast you can buy at any bagel shop in the state. I had one this morning myself

FL here. My impression of the cuban is that there's a small but dedicated following. You can be in the sticks way far from the coast or in the panhandle and you'll find an ancient dingy gas station slinging cubans. snobs will point out the sandwich's historical significance.
Key lime pie tho is bomb af and should be eaten at every opportunity.
