We just got a new chef at our bong restaraunt and he's American. He was fascinated with egg cups. Apparently they don't have egg cups in America? So I asked him how they eat soft boiled eggs and he said they just let them roll around on the plate.

If you don't want to deal with scooping egg out of the shell, yes. It's absolutely a possibility. The cup provides enough resistance to keep you from pushing right through the egg while scooping out yolk. It's just a cultural thing, eating an egg with a spoon is easy for a European but Americans are used to big portions and taking four or five bites to eat a single egg is intolerable for them.

It's the same deal with the shell. Eating egg in the cup means you peel it as you eat it, but this is a slow process and Americans are used to eating much faster than Europeans.

The rule of thumb with Americans is if you can't put it on a burger they aren't interested in eating it.

Im a burger and these were standard fare at home growing up.
Now that I'm grown and poor when I make a soft boiled egg it doesn't make it to a plate I either spoon it all out while holding it or peel it and eat in two bites.

methinks you are focusing far too much on Americans to distract yourself from the part and parcel of living in a major city

I remember an American at my high school on a student exchange who thought egg cups were fancy shot glasses.

They're cute and novel when your a kid. Line up your little soldiers according to rank and crack the top of the egg off. Now that I'm 31, I ain't got time for that shit.

Start them in hot water, pop a wee hole or crack into the fat/hollow end of the eggs just before putting them in the pot if you don't mind the possibility of them looking less than great, and a rinse with cold water is enough to shock them - it also helps not burning yourself with boiling hot shell while peeling eggs... and then, as homie suggested, tap the fat/hollow end to start the cracking process, and roll or tap-and-roll around the whole egg to break up the shell while keeping the membrane intact. Start peeling from the fat end, and it should more or less slip out of the membrane. If some shell remains, pick it off, or rinse again quickly under cold water.

I dont get why that burger farmer is this assmad about the egg cup. The only reason it exists is because people ate so much soft boiled eggs they had to make a cup just to make eating them easier. Of course as a burger who doesnt, it appears completely superfluous. It honeslty appeared to me as one of the basic kitchen things to me but apparently burgers are this different. It not even a recent thing too its thousands of years old to euros its as mundane as a bowl.

Eating softboiled eggs from the shell is stupid anyway, it makes it much harder to get all the white from the shell.
