Beyond meat has a weird aftertaste that breaks the illusion. Impossible does a good job though. I've made burgers and tacos with impossible meat and you can't tell the difference between it and lean ground beef. Please respect animals for who they are. A cow is not a dog, you can't keep it in your home unless you are willing to clean up passive piles of cow shit.

Also remember that an entire cow can easily feed a man for a years. A dog, which only gets up to maybe 100 lbs, can't do that.

Depends on how the animal is fed. An animal eating grass it's whole life requires no crops. A compost raised chicken requires no crops, hell, you can even fatten pigs on food scraps.

Not to mention a lot of animal feed is byproduct from processing cash crops. Like ethanol and soybean oil.

You also keep pissing and claiming we don't have enough land. Have you ever left your shithole of a city? The countryside are becoming more and more empty and wealthy people are buying up massive swaths of land and doing literally nothing with it. Where I live some rich asshole has a huge property that must take up maybe a million acres and it's just maintained as a horse area while they continue to buy out more farms to feed to their wasteland.

Land by volume is not an issue.
And you are only bitching about crops like corn and soy. You have no idea that in places where human crops are mostly grown in the salad bowl of the United States like California the environment is going to absolute shit because of the desertification that is going on there.

Way more people should be farming. I'm not saying 100% like your deficient brain is assuming. I am thinking 5% of the population farms like they did 50-100 years ago, and that polyculture, soil prioritizing farming should be prioritized over industrial, profit prioritizing agribusiness. That's kinda integrating, I didn't realize that biofuel leftovers could be used as feed. Despite that though, globally 36% of all crops produced go directly to animal feed and with the way population is increasing and how people's preferences for food are changing in developing countries this could lead to serious problems in the future. Also, not all land is suited for agricultural use, just because we technically have the land doesn't mean we have the land.

As for the number of people farming, I'm pretty sure it'll go down in the future. More people back then farmed because farming techniques were more inefficient. I recently worked on a project for one of the big farm equipment companies and they automation solutions planed for the near future.

>An animal eating grass it's whole life requires no crops.

Hey, but don't take my word for it, massive amounts of money are being put into artificial meat development. I live in the countryside on 400 acres. The land used to pasture cattle before it was converted into a corn/soy farm, which I plan to slowly convert back to pasture as well as orchards, ponds, market gardens, managed timber. We currently rent out some of the land to grow alfalfa and other fodder to a neighbors beef operation. I will have absolutely no issue grass finishing a small herd of beef.

> How do you plan on feeding a billion of them

Name me one damn individual farm that has a beef herd that is a billion strong. Worldwide we don't even slaughter a billion bovines each year.

You also talk about population growth being a problem. Even if you somehow took away all animal products the human population will continue to grow.

A constant blind focus on using technology to try to solve problems created by technology is not going to fix things.
If you want my opinion our species is just as mortal as we are as individuals. I just do my best, which for me means having a direct connection with my food. In the last year I've gone from going to the supermarket twice a week to once a month. I hope in a years time to go even less often.

Almonds can't provide anything like the nutrition that beef can.

Beef is very high in protein and has essential nutrients such as vitamin B12, a vitamin which is essential for human health (absence of which can lead to irreversible neurological damage), and which AFAIK is only naturally found in animal products (meat, dairy, eggs). Some foods, like breakfast cereal, are sometimes fortified with B12 (B12 is artificially added). But the natural source of this vitamin is animal products.

Almonds are 50% fat. Beef, on the other hand, can be very lean. Obviously it depends on the cut, and whether you grind your beef, but a lot of ground beef is typically only 10 - 20% fat.

Beef protein is also considered nutritionally "complete" because it has all 9 essential amino acids that humans need, in good levels. Almonds are not a good source of all 9 essential amino acids, unless you ate an unreasonably large quantity of them.

Its good for planning for the future, with climate changes and other issues we don't know for sure if animals will all survive as things go on, or more important if they'll be worth the price it takes to raise them.

Plus moving to manufactured meats means we can produce even more of it, in places that can't necessarily breed or raise animals due to climate or spacing issues.
For example what if we made a mars colony someday, maybe not for permanent settlement but just a research facility. Or just a larger space station. Would be nice being somewhat self sufficient and able to produce your own meats without having to import a bunch of cows.

I doubt we'll colonize mars for living, but I could see research facilities and such. Same reason we have the international space station. There's lots of experiments nad stupid things people want to do they don't want to/can't do on earth.

Plus still opens up possibilities for other events such as larger sprawling metropolises taking up land meaning we'll need to get meat indoors. industrial production might save space and energy.

the majority of cows in the united states are raised in vertically integrated industrial farms where they are fed until they are grown enough and then processed.
your neighbor is the exception, not the norm. the meat in your local supermarket is not coming from farmers like him. keep supporting him if you are as smaller family farms are going belly up every day.

I don't buy meat or eggs from the supermarket (with a plan to quit supermarket dairy by 2022). I actually eventually want to only go to the supermarket a few times a year, like 4 times a year would be ideal.

look at that, almost 30x the output at only 4.7x the cost

because it requires retarded conditions to grow in, and food having to travel tens of thousands of miles is bad for the environment.
Cows and other livestock can be raised in most countries and thus don't need to zig-zag around the globe jacking up emissions caused by freight.

I genuinely think that plants must have feelings based on the kinds of behaviors we're able to observe in them, like how trees can intentionally send nutrients to other sick trees in a forest or how they can intentionally grow in specific ways to help the trees around them. Mushrooms as well seem to be capable of some complex shit and can solve mazes like rats. I genuinely have no doubt plants can feel things in ways we just don't fully understand and can't relate to, but people don't like to think about that idea because it's too hard for them to empathize with an organism so vastly different from themselves. The idea that animals have some kind of special dominance over "feeling" seems majorly egotistical and shortsighted.

Got some bad news for you... Star Trek (and Star Wars, and Harry Potter, and Santa) isn't real. We haven't put a man on the moon since the early 1970s, and no amount of veganism or insects is going to help curb overpopulation.
The truth is our species is eventually going to go extinct. Probably a lot sooner than many other species. I highly doubt we are going to be around in a million years. I'd be shocked our species sees another 500,000 years. I'm pretty sure we are also going to be replaced with other animals (and maybe even plants) that will evolve to fill our niche, and they too will go extinct.

>>15646664
Don't even try to explain it to vegans. They are severely traumatized by factory farm footage and already are terrified of their own mortality. I can agree with vegans that the hyper consolidation of our agricultural system is disgusting, but veganism doesn't fix it. Encouraging more people to leave cities and reinhabit dying rural pockets to practice permaculture farming and reconnecting with their natural roles would be more of a solution. But it's not consumable enough for the convenience addicted, impatient masses.

Plant and fungus are capable of actions just as complex as animals, they're just harder to observe and understand because we are animals.
The hierarchy of giving a shit about "feelings" or whatever the fuck goes yourself > family > friends > humans > mammals > other animals > plants and fungus

The human concept of pain and suffering is barely applicable to non- mammals, applying it to plants is just dumb, not to say they don't have their own version of it.

>The hierarchy of giving a shit about "feelings" or whatever the fuck goes yourself > family > friends > humans > mammals > other animals > plants and fungus
I don't disagree, but I also don't try to say it's immoral to kill living things for sustenance in the first place. I simply think drawing some arbitrary line of morality at killing plants and fungus just because we may not understand how they feel is dishonest.
>The human concept of pain and suffering is barely applicable to non- mammals, applying it to plants is just dumb
Did you know that up until sometime in the mid-1900s doctors thought that human infants did not feel real pain? They were convinced that babies crying did not indicate true feelings of pain, only mimicry of such, and they used this line of thinking to justify performing surgery on infants without anesthetic. Today we insist that fish, crustaceans, fungus, and plants don't feel pain and any indication of what we would call pain must just be some form of mimicry of what we would consider pain rather than "real feelings of pain." Pretty interesting, if you ask me.
