I mean maybe? it's still to new to tell if it's worth it, not to mention it competes with the flair which seems like the most accessible option to make good espresso at a cheap price.

I have a Sunbeam EM6910 that I'm determined to hold onto til it dies, with a VST 18g basket that is just thicker than the standard enough that I'm sure it's damaging the collar. But for all the fact that it's definitely appliance tier, it's very temperature stable, you can adjust the brew head temperature, its shot-programming is volumetric, not time based - though I dose onto a scale anyway - and it's continuing to pour very drinkable espresso. When it does finally die I'll drink filter only until I can put a Lelit Mara X on the bench instead, but until that point I continue to be happy with it.

Anon, please. Moka pot is one of the simplest and more effective methods of making a good cup of coffee. I'm going to detail what I do:
>grab kettle and boil water
>meanwhile grind the beans a medium coarse
>put moka pot on the stove, fill base with boiling water up to the valve, put basket filled with grounds and leveled, then screw firmly the last piece
>turn the stove on LOW, wait for the gurggling noises, take inmediatly out of heat and place under a stream of cold water from the tap

Those are garbage unless you throw a $200 set of SSP burrs into it. The whole point of getting a manual grinder is you're not paying for a motor. You are the motor. Therefor, more of the money you spent will go to the burr set. You're not instantaneously boiling water for your coffee, so you can budget out 40 seconds of your morning. Also seeing as you're not paying for a motor or gearing to reduce the action of the motor, you don't have to worry about either of those going out. Buy a $200 hand grinder, be content for the next decade.

Been using a Hario V60 for awhile now. I love it, but buying the filters is starting to annoy me. I've looked at the Bodum pour over and it seems interesting. What are your thoughts on it? The idea of having a permanent filter seems nice. I also recently have been looking into getting something to pour the coffee into so I can make bigger batches instead of fitting it directly to one cup/mug. If I want the Hario V60 cup as well as a pack of 100 filters, that will end up being $25 which is more than the Bodum is right now. I question if it is worth it when I could just buy something that I won't need any peripherals for.

My main concern is over the quality of the bodum, and also the safety of metal filters. I'm not sure how different it is from a French press, but I remember reading that paper filters are a lot safer/healthier for people. I like the taste of coffee so I don't mind the oils and flavor being more potent, but I do also want to protect my health. Does it really make a big difference using a paper filter pour over versus something like the Hario? I've also heard that the Bodum has a tendency to have the water pour too quickly and thus the coffee isn't properly brewed.

>> No.15599812

I just use a #2 filer on top of the metal filter, I just buy a 100 pack of the brew right filters too.
Works fine.

>> No.15599916

>>15599769
Can't you just buy a small glass carafe?
There's nothing inherently wrong with metal filters. You'll just get more particulate matter and oils from the coffee, which will give it a different mouthfeel and taste. You'll probably need to adjust your grind as well, since the metal filter might provide less resistance.

>> No.15600294

I should mention I added the paper filter to deal with the 'grit' that settles to the bottom if I don't use a paper filter.

>> No.15600713

>>15599916
That's what I was referring to. A small glass carafe + 100 filters for the Hario V60 will end up costing more than the Bodum, which has a built in carafe and filter so I would never have to buy extras for it again theoretically.
>>15599812
>>15600294
To be honest I just don't see the point buying it at all if I'm going to get filters for it anyway.

Also does anyone know what generic paper filter I should use with Hario V60? I buy a #2 of theirs for mine so I tried buying a #2 Kroger branded filter and it was too small. I am guessing I need a #4 or is it just not compatible at all? The off brand filters are less than half the price of Hario's overpriced filters.

Just remember that you usually get what you pay for when it comes to cheap coffee filters. And you aren't really comparing apples to apples when looking at a metal filter vs. a paper filter. Kinu because I don’t want to support chinkshit, and you can use the M47 as a weapon.
My only issue is it’s annoying switching between pourover and espresso grinds. I’ve thought about buying a basic M47 with the pourover burr.

i had the bodum pourover before switching to a chemex then switching to a v60. the bodum carafe is nice but its more annoying to clean compared to a v60 glass carafe. plus the glass on the bodum is kind of cheap imo. paper vs metal taste is a matter of preference, but i'd say you'd do better with paper. i would just get the v60 filters and carafe and be done with it.

thoughts on the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for espresso?

I managed to snag a refurbished one on Amazon for $160 total. My machine is a modified Delonghi ec155 that i got with a gift card about a year ago and I've been using preground illy ever since but I wanted to start grinding my own

>> No.15606192

I've had the first-gen Smart Grinder for about five years using it pretty much exclusively for espresso for the first three years or so and always liked it. Can't speak for the changes they made to the newer one but I found the early version to be fairly low on retention, relatively consistent. It's a little slow but I think it's pretty good bang for buck. (bang for puck, maybe lol) As time went on I started running out of adjustment at the fine end - yours I think has a second level of macro adjustment? Mine I was able to shim for a while, then got a good deal on a Sette 270 and moved on, but yeah I think they're pretty decent for the money.

Not that guy and not suggesting that 15 bar at the pump is a good idea but in general terms, puck CSI isn't always a firm guide to shot quality. I used a machine for years that would produce wet sloppy bucks unless you updosed what was recommended to be 16g to about 20g, and then you were seeing the shower screen on the puck. If you kept it in around the 18g range you'd end up with a soft puck and muck in the basket but it was pulling 38g out in 29 seconds and a balanced shot every morning.

IMO the cheapest electric grinder for decent espresso. Good choice. Will make your cheap machine shots taste better now that you're grinding whole bean right before you brew. Also good for filter I believe. Espresso is obviously an expensive affair but you're making your inroads.

>>15609224
Possibly, I believe hand grinding on the expensive hand grinders is relatively fast and painless, but it's still extra effort in the involved ritual of making espresso. If you can see yourself traveling or going outdoors a lot, the hand grinder is possibly a better investment, but otherwise it might be better to save up for a Mingon if you value convenience more.

I had a shitty hand grinder at a similar price point, it was annoying, but I think that the more expensive manuals make the grind quick and easy, so I wouldn't discount manuals off the Hario experience. So I've been toying with the idea of upgrading machines for a couple of years, and have gotten close to buying a Silvia or a Gaggia Pro in the past. But I don't want to have to deal with temperature surfing. I have a couple of workmates who have Silvias, one PID'd, one not, and I had a play on their machines but it kinda seemed like I'd be taking steps forward in some places and back in others. So that took me down the road of looking into heat exchanger machines. Got very settled on the idea of an Oscar II, to the point of adding one to a shopping cart, but got put off by people talking about much pressure they're putting through without an OPV, and then the costs of an OPV on top, and while I don't really give much of a fuck about what something looks like, the Oscar II is just weird enough looking that it kinda was a straw breaking the camel's back.

Had a friend overseas who suggested the Mara, I've been reading about them as widely as I can, watching workflow videos, seeing what hobbyists are doing with them mods wise - for fun, not to bring them up to a standard on purchase like PIDing a single boiler or putting an OPV on an Oscar - and have since had another friend recommend them who's run cafes and competed in barista comps some time ago. They seem to be well-received, they seem to perform well, it looks a little bit like the Rocket Appartamento that I'd really love but that I cannot fucking justify, and it doesn't take up massive amounts of benchspace.
