I just drink a bunch of spirits all in one go and then don't really need to drink any more for the rest of the night. If I do then I'll just have like a double whiskey or something. I actually find it really hard to push past the "I have had enough to drink now" barrier and get properly fucked up, which is why, well, I don't get fucked up, which is a shame.

It's a gene thing. I never liked it but my parents did. I also liked the taste of straight rum and my parents both looked at me like I was crazy and said it's not meant to be drank straight, it's for mixed drinks, you don't have to pretend to like it because you watched POTC

Still don't know if they genuinely thought straight liquor was a movies meme only or if they were afraid I'd become an alcoholic from liking the flavor of it. (They told me to try a little when I was underage and we were on vacation, maybe thinking it would keep me away from it)

This is why most alcohol enthusiasts will never make it. You should be drinking a pint of one drink, then switching to another to get a novel flavour. Otherwise the experience of drinking just becomes dull

Yes. If I'm drinking heavily my palate will eventually be fucked so switching drinks constantly seems like a waste if I can't really appreciate the difference in flavours by that point.
Also if drinking lots of one type of beer becomes dull you should probably drink a better beer.
