Honestly they make good sandwiches but in nyc the bar for food is so high that a sandwich from a good bodega is just considered average tier food, but someone from say the suburbs of the Midwest would probably think it’s the best fucking sandwich they’ve ever had

Most bodegas are owned by middle easterners, and they are open 24/7 and serve actual fresh made food like sandwiches, wraps, burgers, fries and salads
Not to mention many have way better snack options then do a 7/11

They have these all over in the Mexican parts of chicago. The one near my house has menudo, carnitas, chorizo, all made in-house. It's pretty comfy and it's not too hard to go further for some of the better ones.

Couple years ago, I bought a tall boy from a bodega before a concert there. Walked outside, cracked it open, and 2 minutes later, cops from the street saw and gave me a $60 ticket. Don't know how they saw me because it was night, and there were people everywhere.

They don’t have a grill at a gas station for cooking meat, they don’t make salads at a gas station with your choice of toppings, you can’t pick what you want on your sandwich at a gas station, they don’t have a fryer at a gas station.
Also, bodegas have more snack options, gas stations typically just have your standard snack foods (Doritos, chips ahoy, Oreos, etc.) whereas bodegas actually have all those snacks plus the kinds of less mainstream snack food and drink brands that you commonly see at full sized grocery stores
Bodegas have almost double the selection of any 7/11 or equivalent

Lifelong NYC'er here. They can be dirty but often have tasty food. My personal favorite has always been the Chopped Cheese sandwich. Its like a mix between a cheeseburger and a philly cheesesteak. A lightly toasted roll or hero, with mayo, ground beef cooked with chopped peppers and onions, with a large amount of american cheese melted on top. Dip it in ketchup.
