I think that "Karl" was the "funny retard character" that Thornton used to do to amuse people at parties and among his buddies. Then as a joke, they got the idea to make a funny "Karl movie." And then later on they got the idea to try to make it a serious drama, as an even bigger joke. And then audiences actually fell for it.
