There's a lot of good food in illinois. Only poorass families make poor people recipes. No one actually thinks a loose meat sandwich sounds goood, but if it were made the way that it was meant to be made, its a mustard and worchestershire sauced sloppy joe with pickles.
Not haute cuisine, but sloppy joes in themselves are known to be cozy comfort food, and therefore, not any different than a mac n cheese or turkey tetrazini casserole. I always found a tenderloin sandwich starch on starch silly, but if you were german origin like much of the midwest it's the schnitzel sandwich, and that that different than utterly acceptable chicken parm or eggplant parm subs. Just wrap your brain around that people are different from you and their crappy looking regional food is just unfamiliar to your own childhood.
My Chicago relatives are in the top 10%, and very firmly american food like great steaks, vegetables, Italian home cooking, Lou Malnati's, Jimmy Johns, all the local hot beef, and never even once had any Polish food or Irish food I would absolutely eat there, along with other regional goodies found throughout their city. They wouldn't bother. Many wouldn't ever order a tenderloin sandwich over a burger, and would maintain that choice their whole lives, too.

I don't know the name of the place, but when I was visiting someone in Illinois I want to say about five years ago we went up to Geneva to go to a music store and asked where we should go for lunch and they said a burger joint just a few doors down. Great burgers but better was the homemade root beer the music guy recommended we get.

Fortunately, if you know someone with a car that hasn't been reposessed, Merrillville has a mall with an assortment of national brand nondescript franchise chain restaurants just a few minutes away. Goddammit, Happy Joe's is an institution and nothing better happen to it. I loved it growing up and still love it now when I go back for the holidays.

I was pissed when they moved the location on Locust St in Davenport that I always went to, and gave it all modern decor and called it "Happy Joe's Pizzagrille" or some stupid name like that. I guess they wanted more indoor dining but then the pandemic happened of course.

Taco pizza and that diced Canadian bacon they have are my favorites. I live on the east coast now and we have great pizza here, but I'll always have a place in my heart for Happy Joe's.

As a kid, I was indifferent to it, but as an adult, I like it a lot. That sausage they use is excellent, and that thick layer of cheese sprinkled with herbs, mmm. I know it's not for everyone though. My dad loves it; my mom hates it.

I haven't lived in the QC since 1998, and I went to college in Iowa City 98-02. Until the pandemic, I went back to see my parents pretty much every year. I don't know what Jungle Bungle is and I didn't hear about the shooting, although everyone seems to say that crime in the QC has gone up over the past several years (they use people coming from Chicago as a scapegoat but I don't buy that).

It's the "new" play place and arcade at the Happy Joe's on w. 50th street, they probably put it in around 1994, it was a popular spot for birthday parties when I was a kid.
