depends how poor you are, sometimes i like to see how cheap i can make a meal.

On wednesday i made pottage which is a peasant dish for the middle ages. It made 3 hearty meals for like £1:20

My grandad used to make pease pudding which was ultra cheap. A lot of ultra cheap dishes from the past are now no longer cheap due to the ingredients going out of favour (mutton, ironically is now a luxury ingredient).

One recipe that used to be cheap was slices of potato alternating with thin slices of corned beef in a large baking tin. Once you've run out of ingredients, fill the tin with beef stock with some sage and pepper added. Cover in tin foil and cook for a 3 hours, then bake for 30mins uncovered at a higher temp to crisp up the top. You ideally want it so that most of the stock has been soaked up and what remains has thickened. No longer ultra cheap as Corned Beef isn't cheap any but you're still looking at 3-4 large meals for £3-4
