You can steam larger amounts as well and you aren't wasting paper towels on the veggies. As for the burner argument, I imagine you aren't using all four burners simultaneously for this. By that argument alone a bamboo steaming basket is better. I'll go further. Actual steaming is adding moisture rather than preventing an escape of moisture that is happening in the microwave. Also the bamboo basket is leaving the asparagus dry instead of damp. It's a minor problem and most people don't care about slightly damp vegetables. Whatever. Bamboo steaming also allows many layers which could cook way more asparagus at the same time. You referred to using a burner as taking up space, but the multiple layers could allow you to cook a whole meal in the bamboo basket. What does microwaving have over the basket? Time. That's it. Debatable a similar product except for the basket being more versatile of a method. You don't even have to steam with just plain old water with the basket. You could heat up aromatics along with the water to add another component to the simple asparagus. Again, I don't have a vendetta against microwaves. I have one myself that I rarely use. It works. It is the best? For the sake of saving time: yes. For any other aspect: the bamboo steamer wins hands down.
