Animals totally do count, and minimising their suffering is a moral imperative, but there is a difference between the ideal state of being and the practical possibility you can enact. It's not about being clairvoyant. It was using common sense. The land had been managed by humans, but it just didn't look like it. The natives were getting tons of their food from the bison who grazed on the plains for millenia. The colonial settlers were and still are ignorant for trying to totally revamp a system that was already effective.
